I had my chain stretch at 85,000 km. I just bought the car used 2 months ago and they denied my warranty for not having any maintenance records.

From my research they revised it in 2011 and it is now a triple link chain so hopefully it will not stretch.

Here is the chain that was in my car (2008 x)

Here is a pic of the chain they ordered me:

Look at the difference:

I called them out on it. I said why do i have to pay for these repairs when they clearly know there is an issue with the chain. They obviously know or they would not have revised it.

They said that they probably changed suppliers. BS!!

I have an 08 EVO X GSR with 58k miles and I'm having my chain replaced. I have bolt on mods and the car is daily driven but not tracked. Check engine light lit up on Saturday and when I started up the car on Sunday there was a loud noise that I knew was not good. Turns out the timing chain was stretched bad.

I have a 2008 evo x GSR with 28k. The exclamation in the middle of the triangle light is on. I have no other lights on. My question is does this mean that I need to replace the chain? Sorry for the noob question.

not uncommon as many posters have already said. i ride streetbikes as well and anyone who rides a chain driven bike knows its all about the quality of the chain as to how long it lasts, really no difference here. are there aftermarket options for the timing chain?

Wow what a long thread to complain about a wear and tear part. I agree 100% that if it stretches early and you can honestly say you did the oil changes as required and you didn't put too much "shock" load on the chain, that Mitsubishi should cover it under warranty.

Owning a 2010 for two and a half years, it never ceases to amaze me the number of thing I hear from other Evo owners. Then it all makes sence.

"I can't afford to change my oil right now..it's synthetic so it should be good for 7500 miles."

"Oil changes last 15,000 miles with this special oil I use."

"Dude, I was racing this vette so I dropped the clutch at 5000 rpm and blew him away."

These cars are designed for spirited driving for sure, not to be abused. I know there of those of you out there that think that for $35,000 you should be able to drive an Evo through a brick wall at 100 mph and take no damage. For some reason people forget that bone stock the Evo makes more horsepower per liter than any other production car. Then you expect to double the cars base wheel hp and for nothing to break? Really?

It all boils down to how to drive and how well you do maintence.

I have 54k miles on my car over 400 hp and 400 tq to the wheels daily driver and have no issues like this. I get 24,000 miles on a set of ZR rated tires. I did just replace the timing chain only because I wanted bigger valves and some head work.

There is a moderator here on this forum that has over 400 hp as well a daily driver and he is still on the stock clutch.

Bottom line, stock or modded doesn't matter. You drive like a retard, your car will act up, break, give you a headache. Use common sense and you car will last a long time.

I couldn't agree more.

BTW - I am that moderator, 416whp, daily-driven, 42k miles, and my stock clutch is still holding strong. Treat the car well and it will do the same in return.

Update-87,000 miles. Original clutch, no chain codes yet, no diff pin issues, etc.
Of course, I change my oil every 4000-4500 miles (Amsoil 5W30), and am generally known as a giant Vagina, but hey--it works for me!
