Really? I've never heard of such a thing before.

I think he confused "breaking in" your car with "breaking" your car.

It is a chain, there is no break in period. If you want to help it i would soak the chain in oil over night before installing it to ensure it is properly lubed up first. After that you are good. Start the car and let it all oil up and off you go.

Hit 50k with my X. Just had the entire chain replaced by the dealership. Good thing there is a Message Board from Mitsubishi regarding this. It is covered completely by warranty.

Had this happen in a friends car today.
08 GSR.
FP Turbo / Bolt on's / Cobb AP.
63k miles

Symptoms: Spin, no start. Low compression. Coils firing out of sequence.
Found massive slack in the chain, and engine out of time.
Doing the repair in a few weeks when I can get to it.

Yeah I have the same thing. An 2008 with 24K on it. Has your idle gotten worse? Have you had to change the timing chain?

i have an 08 with about 16k miles on it.

at work i park rear first and notice that this happens all the time even though i put it in 1st gear. it doesnt go all the way back to hit the curb but it does "jerk" back for me to notice it.

is this the same as what is quoted above? my car starts fine and idles fine.

It should only skip a tooth if it's loose and the tensioner is maxed out.

So it's normal, to still roll back a bit even when gear is on 1st?

Yah... gravity wins

I'd always set the parking brake unless you just got done with a hard session (track, etc)

Got my 2008 (76,000) pretty clean on mods, just Cobb Filter basic program.

One day idle was horrible, so I took her in today, they say its a stretched chain.

$1100 to replace the chain

Once its replaced they cxan tell me if I have head / valve damage up to $4400 for a new head but I assume some bent valves will not go that high. Reading all the forums and sites out there it appears the 08 chain was re-designed with a much better chain, and the oil tube was replaced with an oil hole as a loose chain will cause the oil guide to break, then having no oil on it!

I love when they KNOW there is a problem but will not help you fix it. Where was that mysterious strech warning P0012???

2 talons, 1 eclipse, 1 evo9 and an evo 10 most new from the dealer.. Ths is my LAST mitsu..

Broken :
SAWC pump ($1600)
Strut Tower bushings (mitsu couldn't figure out what the "clunk" was but my mechanic did
Recaro seat tops fell apart (warranty) but the baffon at the dealership destroyed my plastic rail covers.
Driving light replacement, tech broke my headlight harness, 5 trips back an forth for that.

To many little issue. Here comes the S5

Wow, look like the same problem the old Acura Rsx type-s had. I know that Acura had to come out with a stronger chain just like Mitsubishi did. I also would install a aftermarket chain tensioner if there is one available yet. I think the chain is half of the problem. If there is not enough tension the chain can get loose and skip a tooth.

Well good / bad news. Good news a leakdown test was ok (5%) so no bad valves, but one MIVAC sproket is shot, so looking around $1800 to fix all now
