I don't see how a non-rotating crankshaft is going to any more stress on a timing chain than a rotating one. Please explain.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand to hear stuff from Mitsubishi like that. "Heres a high performance rally car, dont drive it too fast."

If that was a real issue they should have either set the rev limiter lower or designed something that could with stand it.

In regards to using the parking brake, does this apply to the MR? I set the brake everytime I park. Not sure its doing much. Does anyone know if things are "in gear" when using park on the sst?

Just because its not rotating doesn't mean there's not stress on the chain(when you park the car and leave it in gear without using the E-brake). please explain to my how another members chain jumped a tooth when he parked it. What keeps the car from moving when you park it and leave it in gear without the parking brake?

Engine Compression.

There should be minimal strain on the chain when the car is parked, but nowhere near when the chain is actually driving the cam gears and actuating valves.

Yeah, great... I'm at 61k with mods so I know I wouldn't be covered. Still running fine, knock on wood.

The load on the chain is the same if it is parked in neutral, in gear, on a hill, with or without the e-brake!

Regardless- load isnt what "stretches" chains, wear is.

What happens if the chain breaks? Any big trouble like when a t-belt breaks or the head is safe?

The other member whose chain jumped a tooth is me. The chain jumped a tooth bcause the car rolled backwards about 3 inches while in first gear with a timing chain that was complely slack. With the crankshaft rotating the wrong direction, the normally slack tensioner side of the chain became the taut side and pushed the tensioner in somewhat (back to the last rachet paul) which caused a great deal of slack on the normally taut side. The slack was enough to allow the chain to ride up off the teeth of the intake cam and skip teeth.

This is a forum, where people come and post what problems they have - people dont come in here and talk about how good their cars are running until something happens.

Talked to the evo tech @ my dealership (who is a really good guy) while getting a cv boot replaced (under warranty) and they haven't seen the issue yet, in either evos or base lancers. My guess is that there have been a few bad chains coming off the line and we are hearing about them. Maybe we should start an "i don't have chain stretch" thread.

i'm a little surprised - i thought the point of switching over to the chain was that it wouldn't stretch? in general i haven't really heard of this

TIMING CHAIN MAINTENANCE
When the vehicle equipped with 4B11-T/C continues the severe driving conditions like the competition
*1, the amount of carbon mixed into the engine oil tends to increase. This might cause the timing chain to gradually extend. To prevent this, the engine-ECU has the function or logic to monitor the amount of timing chain extended.

NOTE:
*1: Driving to fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal repeatedly all the time.

I really hate it when people start overreacting about issues with the car. Remember that there are literally thousands of EVO’s (all models) and lancers out there, and this is not the only issue and will not be the only issue, it all depends on how you drive the car and how you take care of it (and even then you can’t stop having issues… sometimes you’ll just be unlucky). Someone else said that BMW’s, Mazdas, or Nissans don’t have ‘catastrophic’ issues like the EVO’s or STi’s, come on, get on their forums and you’ll see they have some type of issue that is ‘catastrophic’. I know people with BWM’s with fuel pump issues and electrical issues, I know people with RX8’s and they have little engine issues. Stock or modified, the EVO is a ‘high performance’ car and you should expect to have issues with it, ALL cars have issues. Just because the car was 35k-45k doesn’t mean it won’t have issues, not even owning a 100k-250k car guarantees no issues. If people wanted a cheaper car to fix or “more reliable” car then trade in your EVO and go get a Honda civic (and even then you’ll have issues) or something sub 20k.

just had the same thing happen to my 08, stretched chain with only 20k miles on it, it does have a UICP, test pipe and exhaust. basic bolt ons.... im waiting to see if it will be covered or not but yeah it is modified so maybe not, then again its a chain that shouldnt stretch!! oh yeah at the moment the dealer is telling me that its going to be around $1600 to fix.
