It's a wear item, not covered.

See page 6 & 7. It lists the timing chain as a warrantied item, but only against defects. It isn't listed under wear items. Although that section only states "examples."

I have 43k and tons of mods, no issues and I track it all summer long. Makes me nervous... Hope this doesn't become an issue. Good luck to those of you who have/had this problem

At what milage should the timing chain be serviced? It should be covered under warranty if it fails prematurely.
if the car is stock, and they can't proove it was abused, they should cover the chain. This is just my opinion, but i think it is logic.

So... having the chain driving the 30lbs of rotating mass should be more stress than the chain being driven (in the wrong direction) by 3600lbs of car (obviously static though)?

I can see how that would be more stressful, but I don't think it is this 1 incident that stretched the chain. It was just this incident caused it to jump *after* it had been stretched and was specific to the chain being driven in the wrong direction.

This is a bit scary... I guess I'll look at my chain a little closer before blindly putting it on a new motor.

We might need a how-to on this.

If it is high revving that does it, then how come there are so many cars with cams that have much higher redlines with no such issues reported? Perhaps indeed there's a bad batch (I hope)?

I wonder if we could get a better quality chain that doesn't stretch. Moreover, I wonder if the newer models have a better quality chain; I'm sure Mitsubishi has been monitoring the warranty claims..

If there are any dealers among us, could you check if the chain part number has been updated / superseded by a new part number (especially for first production year EVO Xs)?

Himm so perhaps they updated the part without changing the part number? I know it sometimes happens...
