Weak points in Evo X?
I just bought my 11GSR and I've been paranoid after reading the forums too, but all in all with *any* new car:
1) How do you drive it?
2) How do you maintain it?
3) How good are you at identifying sounds, smells, and feels that will let you know something isn't right and needs to be investigated?
I took my car in for an oil change after 2 weeks and 1 small weekend trip out of state. I figured it was a good idea to get the break-in lube and what not out of the car now that break-in is done. I did follow break-in. I think I only went over 5k revs 3x during break-in and that was to make it onto the freeway. I used some engine breaking in the first 300miles or so, so really make sure stuff is sealing.
I plan to do the trans, TC and Diff fluids by 5k miles.
I'm pretty sure that if I don't try to give it WOT at 2k rpms in 5th on a day it's 120degrees here in Phx, I should find it treats me well.....
I plan on only doing intake, ic pipes, fmic, high-flow cat and catback and I'm going to hope the dealership doesnt laugh me out the door on my 100k mile warranty. (at least the extra warranty was worth the 10year roadside service)

One annoying thing I have found is that when I burned an mp3 CD (100 Songs) and put it to random I had to wait till the song finished to play another random song if I pressed the skip to next track button it won't play a random track but the next track in numerical order.
The trunk is small, but still usable. The mileage is passable, if you know how to drive (I'm currently hitting between 26-28 highway, pre-tune). The gas tank is 14 gallons... pretty standard, from what I've seen. And the turning radius isn't great, but it's about what you'd expect from an AWD car. A weakness is only really a weakness in comparison to something else (and usually comes with a trade off). So, before anyone can quote a weakness, they need to know what they are comparing it to.
What are you comparing it to, an SUV?

First of... not trying to flame anyone this is just my personal opinion and my intention is not to throw **** at your choice...
I have the MR touring because I wanted to get as much "luxury" out of the evo as possible, as well as having the most sound deadening on it.
The GSR 5 speed was a dumb move on mitsu's part as if you dont go with a quite exhaust system evo can get annoying at highway cruise speeds (5th gear).
A few things that all the evo models share is the rattling inside. The glove box rattles so do the ac control knobs but you can just get presto felt and fix it all without the presto felt even being visible.
As for putting power down on the SST and GSR, you will want to upgrade both (not sure what part exactly for gsr but... for SST you will want to get SSP clutch packs) after you are close to 400whp.
Trunk and gas tank are pretty small but its an EVO, you shouldnt complain about it that much when you are pulling close to 1gs at turns you know...

Also not trying to flame anyone, but the gas tank is definitely not 14 gallons on the X. I can barely squeeze 10 into mine. I don't notice any flaws when I'm flying down all these curvy roads in west, MI.
bad parts of the X
Rattling ( some of this can be fixed search forums)
WORST paint of any car ive seen chips like crazy
Notchy shifting
poor interior
I dont care about this stuff though because it can all be fixed and the car is so fun to mod and drive.
Im really leaning towards a new one since they improved from what problems the 08's had, but another thing I noticed is there doesnt seem to be a big market for aftermarket parts for them. Im a Buschur fan and was looking at their site and it doesnt seem that they offer 1/2 of the parts of what they did for the 03-06's.
I want something local but all I have found within 50 miles of me is 3 white ones and 1 burgundy.

So funny to hear complaints about the trunk space or mpg or gas tank size...comming from a Mazda RX8 the EVO gas mpg is way better and the trunk is bigger in the EVO. My Evo can get 22-24mpg if im doing hiway speeds...rx8 never got over 18mpg...I guess it is all what you are used to but im very satisfied with my GSR...is it possible to be in love with a car?
As far as weak points that could potentially cost you money, I would have to cite the issues with the timing chain, diff pins, and ACD/AYC pump that SEVERAL people have had fail. The timing chain is sort of hit or miss, but it does happen, and it happens with relatively low miles. The diff pins depend largely on how you drive the car. Launching and beating the crap out of it (which some will contend is how an evo should be driven) will potentially cause the pins to back out and grenade your tranny. The ACD/AYC pump is very susceptible to corrosion and there have been too many cases of those failing - this to me is the big one. I had an EVO IX in which the pump was toast by 30k miles and it's an EXPENSIVE repair, even more expensive on the X as it's both AYC and ACD that is controlled. If you live in a northern climate, it's not an if it's a when will it fail.
Aside from those issues, I think they are pretty solid cars. As others have said, they have their quirks, but if you can put those aside I think you'll be very happy with your decision.
On another note, where the hell are you getting a brand new Evo for $30k?? That is stupid cheap!

2008-2010 had the following issues:
- Solid front brake rotors breaking - fixed by '11
- Diff pins snapping - fixed by '11 (maybe late '10s)
- Notchy transmission - fixed by '11 (my transmission is butter unless I shift HARD)
- 1st gear throttle limiter in MR - fixed by '11
- Super silent exhaust - fixed by '11
- Overfilled transfer cases in '10 models - fixed by '11
- Gas pedals breaking - fixed by '11 (or this may have been because of not using floor mats)
- Stretching timing chains - fixed by '11 (haven't heard of any cases yet)
- Recaro seat staple issue - fixed by '11
- Fuel Rail - fixed by '11 (was a recall back in '09)
You can't go wrong buying a new car. Long as you don't mod it for a while (enjoy the car for what it is and learn to drive it, ie driver mod),
will cover anything that breaks. When you're happy with the amount of warranty you've had (15k -> 60k miles), then start to do some light mods that
most likely won't care about. Drop-in, catback, etc.
