Weak points in Evo X?
Ok guys Ive been looking for a 06 GSR for awhile and found one local with under 50k on it for $20,000 but I also found a brand new 11 GSR for right at $30,000 and the dealership said they were negotiable.
My ? to you Evo X owners is what are the weak points in the X's? Ive heard a few things such as the rods dont hold up much over 350ft lbs of trq and the transmissions are weak etc. Please enlighten me of what problems you guys are aware of. The car would be a daily driver with bolt ons, cams and maybe a little bit bigger turbo to start with.
Thanks

Get the X, easy choice. I love it exponentially over my IX. I honestly wouldn't say the X is any stronger, or weaker, than the IX, it's just in slightly different places. Mitsu seems to have corrected the diff pin issues the 2008 had, and the X has a beefed-up transfer case over the IX which now makes the rear diff the weak point in the drivetrain. Rods are still the weak point in the engine, just like they were with the IX. The 5-speed transmission is proving to hold plenty of power and so is the SST 6-speed.

If you want something more refined with more amenities, go Evo X. If you don't care about insulated turn signal relays, safety, and cruise control, Evo IX. Each car has it's weaknesses in EXTREME conditions like drag racing or high horse power, but what do you expect, they're not meant to be drag cars
I would agree with Kracka and say the rods, they weren't a "strong" point in the 4G63 either. You should be able to make around 370wtq and be perfectly safe. As far as the drivetrain goes the rear diff would be the weakest point.
I like the way the IX looks compared to the X but wouldn't think twice about choosing the X over the IX again. $30,000 for a new X is a sweet deal! Get the X and you won't be disappointed

I say get the X. I had an 06 se and I loved it, but I got and 08 mr and I thing the car is better in almost every way. I do miss the mods I had on my 06, but comparing a stock car to stock car the X takes the cake.
yeah its a tough decision idk ive always loved the 9's but the 10's are cool too and comparing price for a new 2011 and a used 06 the 11 is a better deal bar far.
what kind of times are they running in these cars at the track?

20K for 6 year old car or 30K for brand new car with warranty. Not a tough choice for me. Go X. And as you are not looking to build a race car the X will make a better DD. Just think all your parts are 6 years newer. You also have to deal with the uncertainty of buying a used car. Was it abused, hurt, or just run hard. Will you need to do more maintenance on the used car? Things to consider.
