Does this sound normal?
Hi guys, I had the car started up in my garage and opened the hood to see how dirty it was and heard rumbling. It sounds as if there are plastic pebbles hitting repetitiously in my engine bay...(that's the only way I can try to explain it). I've linked the video I made from my phone. Please let me know if this is normal. My car now has 30k miles and I want to make sure it's running ok...before warranty runs out!
If you hear the video, there's the usual metallic ticking sound and the more low range plastic pebble "thumping" sound in the background which is louder in real life than in the vid...

Thanks in advance!

this is def a leak. I had the same sound coming out of my licp to intercooler coupler at idle.
it may look clamped down, but in reality you need to do a better job lol. do a boost leak test and have a shop fix it. It should be like $80 after labor. At least here in Jersey it is.

Sounds like valve problems.
Here's my reasoning:
On the local forum I hang on a local guy had the same sound. Took his car in and (under warranty) they had to rebuild his head. Apparently the valve tappets were off, and they found one of the bolts that hold the cam guide down was busted and damaged the cam. Total thing ended up being valve job, tappets, and HG and took a couple weeks at the local dealer.
Here's a pic of the damage:

It's definitely in the valvetrain and not the injectors. The car doesn't feel like it's lost performance but has me worried. I have no CELs and the idles fine. It hasn't started doing this until about a month ago. I called Mark Mitsu Glendale and have an appoitment. I have a few bolt-ons, cat-back, UICP, cosworth dropin, and turbo inlet pipe, and stock tune. I told the service guy I have those mods since he asked and said he will look at it. So I dunno if that means I should be good or not?
I have 4200 mi btw.
Thanks.

Wow, gonna make an appointment with the dealer this coming Sat...thanks. I thought the valve ticking sound was common and not an issue...
As for the thumping sound, I'm gonna have the dealer do a leak test also. If it is a cracked exh manifold, would that also be covered under warranty? Or would I have to buy an aftermarket tubular manifold =P.

I hope you get things situated and warranty covers the problem. I recently got my evo after years of saving up and now im searching problems that evo owners have with their cars, that dont have heavy modifications.
But obviously getting an evo means mods++++. And since ***t happens im always second guessing myself on getting mods now or waiting a couple more thousand miles because of situations like this.
Either way gl w/fix.
