Maybe a dumb question

I am the curious type. I want to understand how the engine in my X works, Mostly how the air travels to the turbo and back out. Is there a graphic out there that kind of shows the path of the air from entry to exist? I found some stuff in installation manuals for installing aftermarket piping but it didn't show me everything I was looking for in order to get a better understanding of how the air flows and what each part does in the system.

I have to say, since buying my Evo a little more than a month ago I have come a long way because of this board. I now know that a test pipe is something you put on the car and it stays there, you don't just put it on to test something then remove it. I even got some of the many abbreviations down. Another month or so and I should be in a position to answer questions rather than ask so many.

I haven't worked on a motor since I was 18 (I am 42 now) and it was a 54 VW Ragtop with a 2180cc dual carb motor. So tuning meant actually wrenching on the motor and not hitting a button on a keyboard.

Thanks

LOL Honestly, I am not some slap that doesn't try the other options before "bugging" you with my silly questions. If I ask a question it's because my searches didn't answer them. I understand how sensitive some people are to people not googling first. So I make every attempt to find out on my own. The illistrations I found in my google search were not of the Evo X and didn't make sense. Just showed the air running through the system but nowhere did it show where it entered and how it was piped through. Maybe nothing exists pertaining to the Evo X? Maybe it's in a repair manual?

Googled "How a Turbocharger Works"
Results under images:

That is exactly how things work on our cars...
1. Ambient air gets sucked in through air filter
2. Ambient air gets compressed by turbocharger
3. Air travels through upper intercooler pipe to intercooler
4. Air travels through lower intercooler pipe into intake manifold
5. Air gets mixed with gas from the injectors and sent into the cylinder
6. Witchcraft happens
7. Exhaust gas is expelled through turbocharger spooling it faster unless the wastegate is open.

No, I wish I had it still. It was the oval window with semifores (not sure if correct spelling) I also had a 61 Ghia, 72 Notchback, 60 Bus ragtop. VW's were the thing back then I guess. Them and Mini trucks. Never got into the mini truck thing.

The bug had dual dellorto's. I remember that chirping sound they gave off.

I would love to get an old micro bus with the ragtop and safari windows but they have gone up in price a bit for the clean ones.

The bug was a beast. Off the line at least. It was unbeatable. With the rear engine it was nothing but traction. Of course the V8's would catch me down the line after they got done spinning the tires but I am sure for a second there they wondered how a little 4 banger vw launched on them like that.

The notchback seemed to get the most attention though. I don't think anybody knew what it was. To this date, over 20 years later I don't think I have seen more than one or two on the street.

They are easy to work with. The dual carbs help. Cheap to do as well. Installing the engine is cake. 4 bolts and bam. No computers. Just turn the distributor (without getting the shock of your life) to adjust timing, turn a few screws for valves and you are done.

Thanks, I saw that one and it helped understand it a lot more. Just curious as to how the Evo X looks on a graphic like that. But I will keep searching.

Thank you

You probably wont find a graphic of exactly the evo x. what you should try to do is use that diagram above and try to identify the different parts on your X and match them up to the diagram.

This was also my first turbo car and I only had the general idea of how a turbo system works. I learned the most about the car modding it. 10 days after getting my X i replaced the UICP, LICP and intake. Then I installed a boost gauge which taught me a lot about boost and vacuum lines.

Lastly I would suggest trolling through the How to section, you will come across a wealth of information.

I might suggest you rethink/rewrite your questions to be more specific to different aspects of the Evos motor. The wealth of knowledge on this forum boggles my mind and a few minutes in the engine building and tuning threads is truly inspiring, especially when I realize some of these writers are 20 years younger than I. So, ask a general question "How does the motor work" and your responses will be equally generic. Ask about different pistons, rods, bearings, turbos, spark plug heat ranges, afrs, oil types and you will get very strong responses and perspective.

Take that picture, slap an intake on the right side of the turbocharger, bend the pipes around differently, add intake and exhaust manifolds on either side of the engine, multiply the cylinders shown by 4, and that is an Evo X. That picture really does show exactly how it is on your car, there are just bends in the pipes to go around things while going from A to B.
