Oooook, so I'm replacing my fuel pump yesterday when all the sudden it starts to pour cows from above (read: heavy rain) so I had to stop what I was doing and put the assembly back in and close the entrance to the tank under the seats...

The problem was, right after the rain had subsided I had to hop in the car and drive 50 miles to a friend's birthday party...

So me and the wife get out and about, hop on Turnpike and all the sudden I see the gas meter begins to fall down a "line" every minute... I had a little less than half talk before I tried replacing my pump...

All the sudden I get the "REFUEL NOW OR DIE" sign.. you know the one that comes out when you no longer see any blue line (or orange for the 2008s) on the gas meter line thingie...

At this moment I'm freaking out thinking I have a horrible gas leak and the car's about to explode, or also thinking I must have messed up a sensor or God knows what... But I can't stop to check or try to fix it, I'm on a way to a birthday part in the middle of the highway!

Then I remember I saw the small black float go under the assembly as I tried to take it out the tank, and once I put it back in again, I'm thinking I might have stuck the float under the assembly after I had put everything back in place...

I'm not sure of this cause I haven't checked the car since I got back home last night and parked it; I did put in about 30 bucks just to make sure I wouldn't be left without gas in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not sure that's the issue but maybe... Have any of you had this issue? and if so, was it the float? or did I just mess something up? I remember plugging everything back in place


Also: as if that wasn't scary enough, I get home last night, leave the car on to take some stuff before I park, I open the door and hit the lock (don't ask me why...) and close the driver door again while I go in the house to drop things off... I get back and try to open the door but the door wont open... I hit all the damn buttons on the FAST key and the only thing that pops is the Trunk... "My effing luck" I say to myself as I ponder watching the car remain on and locked until whatever gas was left burns out and it turns off... and then, a light in my head! The FAST key as a stupid metal-old school key inside LOL <_<

Now that left me scratching my head... I wasn't drunk after the party but I sure was stressed and not using my brain maybe

 

It's probably the float. I haven't taken out the fuel pump on the X, but I had done it a couple times on my 8. If I had to guess, that is what it would be.

I'd bet on the float - I had exactly the same problem the first time I put the pump canister back in. The float was caught so that it wouldn't read over 1/4 tank in my case. Just took it back out and was more careful the second time and everything worked fine.

I believe it take a little while to drop because of the software filtering on the quantity.

i literally have nothing to add to this post but this - This has to be the best post in 2012 so far. "REFUEL NOW OR DIE!@!!!!" made me lol so hard haha..

 

Same thing happened to me after I changed my fuel pump. While sitting in the parking lot at work letting the car warm up the fuel level dropped from full to empty in the blink of an eye. I pulled up the backseat and gave a little knock on top of the metal cover and it never happened again. If I had to guess I'd say the float just got hung up somewhere.
