So as the title says, I'm thinking about getting an Evo X GSR, but I'm not sure about mods. I've test drivin and I've fallen inlove!

I'm sure most of you have modded your cars, but my question is, did you mod it yourself? Or take it to a shop to mod. I see the term 'bolt-ons' used a lot, but that's for simple things I assume. For example, I can't lift my car up to like change the exhaust or something, I'd need to take it to a shop so the car can be lifted to be worked on, right?

If you want to save money and know the basic anatomies of a car than I would do the mods yourself. They usually come with pretty detailed instructions. It all depends on if you're willing to risk messing something up. Personally I usually have a shop do the installs.

If you dont have a lift to change the exhaust I would take it to a shop, they usually charge like 50-100.

 

As far as mods, anything that's cosmetic I can do it myself such as fender vents, dress ups, or spoiler additions~ Exhaust in theory is very simple if it goes smoothly, but I'm at the point in my life where I don't feel comfortable getting underneath on jack stands anymore. I don't touch anything that requires "lifting" other than changing to my winter rims. The only performance part I installed myself was the Injen intake and it was relatively easy

 

I thoroughly enjoy doing it myself. Take your time and read up on the part you are installing and give it a go.

Buy the car. Drive it a little, at least a few months. Then think about modifying it. Study up, learn some thing about what's available. Make educated choices about the parts you buy. Then decide if you want to install them yourself or not.

 

I have a lift accessible to me. So I do all my own mods.

I just bought my evo x about 3 weeks ago and I am loving it. Driving it around stock feels really nice. Ive been babying it lately and tonight I decided to push it a little on the on ramp to the freeway. It really puts a smile on my face.

As for modding, you could definitely do it yourself. Many times I go to the forums for help. Other times I just have my friends come over.

I still have the cobalt, and that car was completely modified by me and the tune was actually done by a friend of mine who used to do the tunes for all the ecotechs in the area.

Thanks for the input! I have a friend that own's an Evo 9, and he told me that he installed most of his own parts. But that doesn't seem like something I'd be able to do. I was thinking that installing your own parts was like a normal thing in the evo community, but guess not!

Do you all buy your parts online and then take them to the shop? Or, do you go to a shop, and be like 'this is what I want' and they order it?

 

Installing your own parts is really common in the Evo community, not everyone is doing it but it is common. More so on VIII's and IX's it seems. Alot of it is doable no lift in your driveway.

 

I definitely install my own parts, fortunately I have access to a few car lifts. A lot of its educational and basic car knowledge. The only thing I won't touch is the ECU (tuning) I'll leave that to the professionals that have dynos!!

 

buy the parts wherever, online, on this forum, local trade, some performance shops have parts to sell too... take it to a shop, and have them install it. a lot of the stuff may not be suitable for you... an intake or catback could be easy, but somethig like a spring install you would probably need some help on. I'm a guy and i couldn't do that one by myself (i needed a buddy's help) but your small hands may come in handy in reaching some of those pita hidden bolts in, for example, a downpipe install

Haha, yeah I am. I'm not exactly big/strong so I was worried about part installs.

 

I install some, I pay to have some installed. I buy some online, I buy some local. It really depends what it is, the cost, time value of money, etc.

 

I'm overweight and not small at all, I wasn't super comfortable, but I was able to put my X up on jackstands and swap the exhaust myself. Wasn't too hard at all.

Intake install was super easy too. I had a much harder time working on my STi.

I'm sure you'll love every thing about the Evo, other than the space behind the rear seat that isn't quite the size of a trunk and notchy shifter on the GSR.

 

Intakes are not bad to install. Even one with more parts like the ETS. Just follow the instructions and you will be okay. If you go with the Cobb inlet turbo pipe and Cobb intake it will be super easy. I will get to find out what the exhaust install is like this weekend. I don't think it should be too bad. I only got a catback. Then after that will be the UICP.

 

I just got an Evo X GSR! I haven't done anything to it yet, but even stock you are going to get tons of attention! I am not sure if it is the car, or that I am a girl driving it. Definitely get one...it's tons of fun!
