Why an EBC

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have been trying to figure some things out. I've read a few threads on EBCs and MBCs and am still having trouble piecing together whether it's really necessary.

If I'm doing simple boltons (TB + Intake) and have a Cobb AP that I'm looking to get tuned, what will an EBC do for me? Is it necessary or just a nice to have for fine tuning?

Thanks.
Ryan

MBC:
1. Cheap
2. Can control boost easily with a few pulls to test.
3. Hard to have different boost levels. Well.. the Forge has a click sound for every turn making it easier to set a few boost levels.
4. Had to go to the hood to adjust unless you get one installed inside the cabin.
5. You can have boost spikes and taper

EBC:
1. Not cheap
2. A little harder to setup boost and more parameters to deal with.
3. Very easy to have 2 to 4 different boost levels.
4. Very easy to switch between boost levels.
5. There is a reduced boost taper. Have better control for boost spikes. If you want them... you can have the spikes or you can reduce them.

I think if you are going to change boost levels often then an EBC might be better

For the X, neither; ECU-controlled 3-port BCS.

What does the BCS actually do? Is it just something that would give a tuner more flexibility in tuning different boost levels?

I guess I'm struggling to understand why this is actually necessary. I come from the Subi world where you buy a Cobb AP, have it tuned and you're done. No one uses boost controllers or solenoids. Why is that not the case for X's?

You don't have to add a boost controller to an X at all.

The solenoids help you control boost a little more quickly using the stock ECU, but absolutely not required.

You can keep the dual stock boost control solenoids if you want, but an aftermarket 3-port solenoid is much easier for a tuner to adjust, set, and hold raised boost levels.

Got it, that makes sense. So it seems like a "nice-to-have" but not a necessity in initial modding.

Thanks for the help guys.
