Park Bench Wings on Evo's

I know many have it, and I'm not trying to insult those that do, but I have no idea why a rally car like the Evo would require the surface area of a wing that could produce lift on a Cessna 172 if installed properly.

To me, it screams rice.

What's your opinion?

The Evo has millions of dollars into it's aerodynamics research. The spoiler is purposeful (just as it is on the STi)

Someone on here awhile ago shared the docs from Mitsu on it, and I have lost the thread, but I saved the docs. I *think* this share should work.

Blade,

I'm talking about the aftermarket wings that can seat three people.

If you are actively tracking your car, it does serve a better purpose (as far as adjustability goes)

Well I don't have any documentation to support that, but my buddy runs an APR GTC 400 on his time attack 8. He's mentioned it's useful.

But I have to admit a time attack Evo8 with a conservative 515whp tune on a fully gutted, caged car with quick disconnect fenders and front end is quite a different story then something with passengers you drive on the street.

(here's my buddies car http://www.modifiedcartrader.com/for...x?i=30918&txt= )

for everyday use of the car I think it looks like crap but for those of us who road race/time attack it's bad ***. I don't track my car often so dropping $1500+ on a wing seems pointless. For everyday use I think the do-luck trunks look best

I seem to be in the minority but I like the GSR style wings and they are functional. I would never go for one of the massive aftermarket wings though. I can't imagine for anything but track work, not including autocross, that they are functional. And most probably haven't undergone the right testing to ensure the design is purposeful.

I could definitely see the point in the wing for those who competitively race, but like you said Baum, for everyday/normal driving I think it makes the car look like crap. It borders on hideous. I see some beautiful Evos here which I am sure aren't road raced that have a missing 747 wing on their ***....and I'm like wtf?!

I know it absolutely comes down to personal preference, and whatever floats your boat should work for you, only you, and no one else. Yet I wanted to see if I could find a legitimate reason for such a wing and the resulting downforce associated, considering the Evo was never meant to be a high speed demon that would require said downforce.

I'm curious to know if the force produced was actually beneficial or detrimental after a certain point.

Because for certain type of racing you never have enough downforce. :}

Haha...unfortunately there comes a point where too much downforce can lead to excessive drag, which would have a negative effect and actually slow you down.

I was always under the assumption If you we're looking to create down force a rear spoiler is good for a rear wheel drive car going in a straight line but not beneficial to an all wheel drive car cause of the seesaw affect where as if your creating down force on the rear of a car you have to create an equal amount on the front so that drag is not affected

AMS GT-R top speed run. 218mph. No park bench wing. How much greater is the aerodynamic efficiency of the gtr when compared to an evo? Can't be a huge difference
