I love my EVO but....
I've owned almost all of the cars in this discussion (cayman, 996 and 997 turbo, e46/e90/e92 m3's, EVO X, s2k). Here is my take on it:
If you are spending about $35k on the car, you can not and will not beat the experience you will get from a 996 turbo 911. Don't waste your time with a Cayman (they are glorified boxsters). I wouldn't so much as spit on a BMW again, I've owned several and the only one I would buy ever again is an e36 m3. None of the cars on this list, unless you spend over $40k in mods will keep up with a 996tt with $10k into it. Not straightline, not on a twisty track.
I would take the EVO X over any BMW that is still not in warranty and more than likely, even those that are still in warranty. I hated the constant electrical issues, the horrible dealer service, the constant fear of something breaking out of warranty and the fact that here in the DC area there are 20 3 series for every other car you see. The SMG system in the m5 was GARBAGE and the dct in the m3 was laughable compared to my GT-R and the EVO X.
As for the other 2 Porsches: They are great cars, there is no denying that- however, for price/performance- you just have to go with the 996tt. I loved the Cayman, but it was SLOW compared to my other cars. After a while, it just looked like a Boxster- but reliability was ROCK SOLID and it was very competitive at the track. I think the new Boxster and the new Cayman are absolutely beautiful cars, but you won't touch them for $35kish.
My choice after the 996tt and EVO would be the s2k. I put those cars thru hell and they took it like a champ. They were extremely competitive at the track, and since the "formula" has been cracked- with about $5k into a turbo system, you are looking at a viper killer with those little beasts. They look beautiful and are so reliable that I would often forget that you didn't just put gas in these things. In addition, I would get almost as many questions about the s2k as I did for the GT-R's.
I only ever miss 4 cars that I have owned in the past: s2k, GT-R, 996tt, 997tt (fixed for "Iowa999's" sanity)
Summary:
Stay away from garbage BMW's. Buy the 996tt followed by the s2k or keep the X.

First of all why would you even put Porsche and BMW in the same category??? You cannot put anything in the same category as Porsche...well maybe a GTR...
Bmw and EVo are waaaaaay different, you think BMW service is bad??? You joking right? have you taken your evo to a Mitsu Stealer?? I find Mitsu to be the worst service in the world (i have also owed a few toys in my lifetime) and their US HQ gives zero support to their customers. There is 100000 of us in here that know what the Mitsu dealers can do or most importantly NOT do...
If the OP wants a porsche he SHOULD get a porsche, again BMW, Evo, S2k, or which ever car he chooses is not the same as a porsche. Have driven a cpl of them, even older 80s 911 (which btw are gorgeous) and the Porsche is just waaay to different. Its made to compete and it has class.
Oh yeah i would not get an S2k...just becasue, well for once its not a Porsche and becasue its a Hundaaah. I rather keep an Evo

I'm not sure what your whole point was there, but I'll bite:
I didn't put those cars in the same category- the OP and other people in this thread did. I simply offered my experiences with those vehicles from the viewpoint of someone who has owned some of them.
It's obvious that Mitsu service will not be on par with BMW, but that's pretty much common sense. Mitsus average vehicle probably costs $20k, BMW's probably costs $45k
Agree on the Porsche, but an 80's 911 rides like a deathtrap and there is no way it can compete with any of the newer other cars on a track. Yes, they do have more class

And i think we must keep one major factor in mind- value. For what you pay and what you get, the evo is probably the best car in the world. It has performance and practicality. It's great in the snow. It's reliable. In my opinion the next best all around great car is the M3, if you are in that price range. Remember i am talking about "all around" great cars and value. Of course there are better track specific cars.
I get that this is totally opinion based but awd is by far my favorite platform to drive. I had the ls2 gto and that car had some serious tq. Simple bolt ons made it a bear to drive and control. Now the gto isn't exactly a vette, but I would assume it would be the same for me. While driving at the limit I had some crap the pants moments that was quite hard to correct. Not exactly fun for me. In all of my awd cars I always felt in control and able to push harder. That was fun.
But some want that oh crap momments, Like Jeremy Clarkson. I do not. I agree with s2k though. Drove my friends and that was a great machine.

Lol... sounds like something a chick would say...
I dont care about `class` or getting noticed or being well thought of for what I drive...Im beyond all that fluff and nonsense. That isnt important at all to me...I just occasionally miss the RWD experience.
You want rwd fast and cheap get a 03-04 cobra..end of the story.

Having a car being fast and classy is not nonsense, only people that have not owned one or cannot affords one would say that. If I could afford one i would get a NEWER Ferrari, DB9, 911 an AMG or an M in a heartbeat. Its not about showing off, but mostly about the product itself, you get speed and the luxury of everything else.

Let me know if you are ever in the dc area, I'll introduce you to a dozen "posers" that you can run at VIR.

I have a VW beetle presently as my RWD fun car. It has 227TQ and 211 whp. I feel much safer at high speed in the evo but the VW is fun around town and taking it sideways out of corners.

I shocked the local Ford dealer today when I pulled up in my GSR, I proudly parked it right up front with the cars on display outside of the showroom. I went in and sat down in a Shelby GT 500, it was over $60,000 and was in the showroom. I actually went in hopes of seeing a Boss 302, I was told they only get 2 a year and that if I wanted one, Id have to put 1,000$ down and order it and they didnt know when it would be in, but that th wait would be less than 6 months wait....Ive heard such amazing things about the Boss.
Has anyone driven a Boss 302....if so do tell....heard the handling is amazing.

I went to the Philly auto show and man I have the bug for another car!
Even the base Camaros looked good.....and the Boss 302 is so tempting! I dont know what t do...I tend to trade in and buy cars about every 1.5 years.
I know my EVO will gain in value if I keep it pristine, it only has 4800 miles on it ad no mods....Id hate to part with it now...wow! What a dilemma. But id sure love a BOSS 302! and I cant afford both....has anyone ever driven a BOSS 302...

I went from a 2009 MazdaSpeed3 which was tons of fun but a handful to drive with all the torque steer to a 2012 M3 DCT. I hated the M3 and regretted not getting an EVO. After a year with the M3, i dumped it to get a 2013 GSR!
The M3 had too much over steer and I didn't like having to look down all the time to figure out what gear I was in with the twin clutch.
I take turns faster with the EVO than I ever did with my M3. I got hooked on all wheel drive cars when I had a BMW 330xi.
