I emailed Mitsubishi just for final clarification from Mitsubishi and apparently now, the 2013 owners manual - conventional oil is now the standard. This does not mean I will be using it, I will use only full synthetic but I now know I will have to stick to the 3k oil change interval. I think this is a bull**** move on Mitsubishi's part but oh well... Gives me more incentive to void that warranty sooner. Here is a copy if my email from Mitsubishi:

"Dear STEPHAN MONETTE:

Our Reference: Service Request Number: 1-237660690
Prod Inq/Tech Specs
Date Opened : 2/18/2013 10:59:21 AM

Thank you for contacting the Mitsubishi Motors Customer Relations Call Center. Your Mitsubishi dealership is correct, in that the 2013 Lancer Evolution does not require synthetic oil. You may also review this in your Owner's Manual beginning on page 7-7. Whether you decide to use conventional or synthetic oil, it does not alter the maintenance interval indicated in the Warranty & Maintenance Manual.

Thank you again for reaching out to Mitsubishi Motors, and congratulations on your Mitsubishi vehicle!

Sincerely,

Customer Relations Department"

lol, next Mitsubishi will tell everyone that the Evolution can actually use 89 and below octane, and everyone will say, "BUT THEY TOLD ME IT WAS OK!"

So I am due soon for my first oil change in my 2013 GSR. And I just called to dealership to verify which oil they will be using for my free oil change.. and they said it was going to be conventional. Looks like I'll pay the extra $20 (if that is the price) or just change it myself. Damn this is terrible to hear.

I was under the assumption that due to the increased rate of thermal breakdown, conventional oil was bad for the journal bearings...with this in mind I assumed it was the reason Mitsubishi recommends synthetic. ..apparently I was wrong lol

I changed mine every 3000 miles no matter what. I never had them say to use regular oil since on the engine cover say's mobil 1 synth but after reading these post I made sure they only used mobil 1 synth you never want to mix oil's. I also only used 93 OCT these cars call for only the best service to keep them lasting a long time.

FYI - Mitsu has two free oil changes in 'the system' for me. I bring in my own oil/filter and the dealer has offered to do the change for free if I use the Mitsu filter. I've declined though... I use Eneos Oil and the HKS filter :P Could be pretty inexpensive though to pick up some synthetic from walmart as a compromise if that's your thing!!

I did the first change around 1500 miles and most recently at 5000 miles.

If we use fully syn do we really need to run the 3000 mi schedule? I know what it says in the book about the "severe" vs "regular" schedule, but I don't beat on my car at all. I barely bring it above 5k more than 5 times per week and I don't sit in city traffic.

I know when I had my GLI which was a turbo engine too they said I could go 10k between changes, but I never went above 5k.

I'd rather be safe than sorry. Think about it, if you drive 15000 miles a year, the difference between changing every 3k and every 5k is only around $60 (assuming synthetic is @ $6 per qt). Would you rather take the risk of chances of higher engine wear by saving of that $60?

Mobil 1 5W30 costs $22 for 5 quarts at Walmart. Change it every 3k miles. Don't cheap out. The oil actually looks pretty dark at 3k miles if you ever change it yourself.

Not gonna cheap out at all. I guess I just dont understand how VW can rate their oil change intervals so high while Mitsubishi doesnt is all I am saying. I didnt know if anyone had reason behind it other than obvious higher boost.

That's why my Audi was getting free engine replacements for 10/ 110k what ever came 1st.
This was on my wife's 99 a4 Quattro, we just missed the new motor by 6k. We bought it used, when I found out it was to late.
They were swapping motors due to excessive oil sludge, wonder why.
Even my friend had an 08 325i it told him not to change his oil until 10k. By 18k he needed a new cylinder head.
Maybe this is why German cars are not reliable.
