2012/2013 Oil Change Interval

So, I'm a little confused and concerned :P I have a 2013 ordered and arriving in April. Up until the 2012 MY, the oil change interval was 5k and it's now 3k. When this happened I see lots of threads of people arguing about using dyno vs synthetic oil. To make it clear, I use full synthetic in all my vehicles and that's what I'll be using but at 3k, I think it's a waste of money to be changing the oil. 5k sounds good to me. Why did the oil change interval get moved down if the oil isn't changing? Also, I'm the kind of person that likes to document the maintenance I perform - is Mitsu going to have an issue if for whatever I need warranty work with proof of the work I've done and it appears that I'm changing my oil late? Lastly, is there a way to prevent the car from reminding me to change the oil so early or change what the interval is? I'll have the nav unit so I'm hoping there's a setting I can change there.

Thanks guys! BTW, new to forums here.

Just so you know the Canadian 2012+ Evos still sport the Mobil 1 sticker on the engine cover.

I'm convinced there must be a way to change the reminders to 5k.... I'll see in a couple months! rcantu, just curious, are you sticking to the conventional oil every 3k?

That is incorrect. Says to use synthetic in the owners Manuel in my 2013. I'm sure
They didn't change it for one year. And a lot of dealers seem to be misinformed on
This issue.

Yes you can change this in the NAV unit. But with saying it needs done at 3k
And you do it at 5k. There might be a problem with that if you have an engine warranty
Problem.

goodbye warranty.

If the owner manual says to use synthetic its there for a reason.
I would agree with you if the owner's manual didn't specify then i would be using dyno oil.

Synthetic only in Evo X's regardless of year.

Under the "Optimal Performance" section in parenthesis is clearly states
fully synthetic for Lancer Ralliart and Evolution Models.

i can't beleive they would change the interval to 3k for synthetic.. i've never heard of any car with such a short interval for syn. There probably just trying to nail people for more maintence cost

the more you beat on your car the earlier you should change the oil
in the summer i change my oil every 1500-2000 miles cause i like to play with other cars lol
but in the winter if i drive my car i change it at 3k regardless of beating on it or not
I mean its expensive but its worth my invest ive put in my car

If you notice every mfg that has a turbo car their oil maintenance cycle are less than their N/A counterparts.

wonder why that is

Something of a gratuitous statement, as laws vary great from state to state. Not sure that's correct as (though I need to confirm) that the warranty specifically stipulates that it is null and void if a non synthetic oil is used. I suggest, unless that requirement is clearly stated, we stay away from ambiguous claims of warranty coverage (or lack thereof).

To me they have it in there. I wouldn't chance it if it were me. Now if the dealer
is doing it. And something Happens, then it's their fault. Do I think regular oil
would hurt the engine, not really (I only run synthetic). But to me the books say it (to only use synthetic).
Left (Owner’s Manual), Right (Warranty and Maintenance Manual)

Doesn't any one read the stickies? This has already been addressed. Go ahead and run conventional oil.

Everyone else running Synthetic oil will be running the better choice, especially on a turbo'd car. I could give to ****s at what Mitsubishi says I should run in my car, especially if it costs $20 more for synthetic.

In regards to the TC question. I change my Mobil 1 every 5k miles.

It just sucks that I'll be paying more money than needed to so that way I can meet the warranty requirements because I own a 2013 model. I appreciate the feedback guys. I really didn't want this to turn into a synthetic vs dyno oil thread, I'm sorry. I specifically stated in the beginning I'll be running full synthetic regardless and that wasn't what I was questioning.....

Still - the idea of changing a full synthetic every 3k miles is mind boggling to me ha ha. Especially since I won't be driving in a way to ever meet the 'severe' schedule requirements. Here's the manual in case you'd like to see for 2013 models!
