They were swapping motors due to excessive oil sludge, wonder why.
Even my friend had an 08 325i it told him not to change his oil until 10k. By 18k he needed a new cylinder head.
Maybe this is why German cars are not reliable.
I had an 06 330i, same oil change interval 10-12k/12 months. When I sold her, had 145k miles. I never changed earlier than it told me to. I've had several BMW's, no major issues other than a water pump - I wouldn't call that major though.

Castrol isn't bad, pulled apart a few built motors that only ran Syntec, looked brand new...its what I run in my X

What do you guys think about intervals based on duration rather than miles? I don't drive a lot and start to get ancy around the 6 month mark. Do you think it's OK to go 12 months if the mileage is in the 3-5k mile range?

Should be no issues. The reasoning for changing the oil is due to thermal breakdown. Basically the additives in the oil such as detergents and zinc break down and sludge up and with the breakdown reduces the ability to properly protect critical engine components. As long as its not left sitting for months and months on end with no activity it will be okay.

1 year and 5k miles is no problem for a synthetic oil.

I just got a 2014. I remember talking to my sales guy and he told me mitsu only uses mobil 1 for the evo and that I the maintenance package they where selling does include mobil 1 oil changes.

I would have gotten it but since their like almost 1 hr away and I have to bring it there for their maintenance package, I declined.

Now reading through this post, I am unsure what mine stated on the manual. And before people start talking about not reading it, I read the main 2 manuals and I haven't gotten to the warranty booklet yet since I wasn't thinking about maintenance until maybe 1k or 3k. I will read it tonight thought to find out if it does say conventional oil. Car does say change in 3k miles.

The Evo still uses full synthetic oil and recommends change intervals of 5k miles under the normal duty schedule.

Did you decide to skip over the entire thread? What we as owner's recommend does not mean that's also what Mitsubishi has decided for Evo's 2012 and up. It does not use synthetic oil anymore and it does call for 3k changes.

N52b30 you are 100% wrong.
Please tell me your not running conventional oil in your evo.
You do realize you will fry your turbo & your motor.
I have an email from corporate stating you could use regular oil, but suggested synthetic for turbo longevity. anyone who looks at it from a mechanical standpoint it's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Mitsubishi does deliver from the factory with regular oil. Personally I think it's to save a few bucks. I changed it immediately, less than 100 miles I dumped whatever was in the motor.

On a high boost stock twin scroll turbo, you do know the rpms are in excess of 100k rpms, not to mention the extreme heat of the turbo. Synthetic oil is a must, to keep the heat on that turbo down.

You ever see a red hot turbo, regular oil will cook as it has a lower flash point & losses viscosity at a much higher rate

Check all the cars that come from the factory with Mobil 1.
It's good enough fir cars that cost double the evo, that's good enough reason for me.

May I suggest you do some reading on turbo charged cars & oil requirements.

Example the 2011 evo has a Mobil 1,sticker on engine cover, what could have changed from 2011 to 12/13?
You want to save a few dollars by using regular oil, might as well run regular fuel.,my sympathies to your poor motor.

As far as mitsubishi covering a motor after either the turbo fries or the motor, good luck if you think using regular oil in this motor is ok, by all means its your car.

If someone told you to jump off a cliff with a bungee cord or a parachute, would you do it?

I've used full synthetic Eneos 5W-30 since the beginning after 1k miles. The thread was simply a question I had before I got the car, then a response from Mitsubishi explaining regular oil is now what they use and they require 3k miles oil changes (regular OR synthetic) to honor the warranty. Nothing changed on the car other than getting cheap with the last run of models. Pretty simple, as the owner you do whatever you want but that doesn't change Mitsu's specifications (which I am 100% correct on)

Here's an email from 'corporate' for ya too, which you can see in this thread you did not read...

I think this is a bull**** move on Mitsubishi's part but oh well... Gives me more incentive to void that warranty sooner. Here is a copy if my email from Mitsubishi:

Thank you for contacting the Mitsubishi Motors Customer Relations Call Center. Your Mitsubishi dealership is correct, in that the 2013 Lancer Evolution does not require synthetic oil. You may also review this in your Owner's Manual beginning on page 7-7. Whether you decide to use conventional or synthetic oil, it does not alter the maintenance interval indicated in the Warranty & Maintenance Manual.

Thank you again for reaching out to Mitsubishi Motors, and congratulations on your Mitsubishi vehicle!

Sincerely,

Customer Relations Department"

This is my two cents.
1. Can't compare oil change intervals to cars with 8-10 quarts oil capacity vs cars with 4-5 quarts. Porsche have almost 10 quarts, BMW and Mercedes have 8-10 quarts depending on models.
2. Interval, 3 or 5k? If you track your car, drive aggressively, sitting in traffic all day or ...? Maybe should change oil less than 3k. Mostly freeway miles 3k+ no problem.
3. Conventional oil break down at lower temperature vs synthetic. Turbo runs really hot and will break down conventional oil faster than synthetic. When oil starts to break down it become thicker or sludge. Your oil pump won't be able to circulate that thicker oil as fast during a cold starts. Like they say, 90% of engine wears occur during cold starts.
4. Number one engine killer is lack of oil change, so change your oil! (For Evolution detonation is another killer)! LOL
5. Saying how long an oil change interval should be is at best a guess. Acura have came up with a better way to keep track of oil change interval. (Sure other companies have too) It counts the engine revolutions and by time. I think its between 6 months and 8000+ miles depending on how the car is driven.
