NEED ADVICE...Buying High Mileage MR

Ive found a 2008 Evo X MR looks to be in pretty good condition and the owner looks like he has a TON of service record from mitsubishi. The car does have a couple small dents which look like they can be PDR and the AWC pump has gone bad. The car currently has right about 90k Miles and I can pick it up for right at $15,000.

Is this a good deal?

Am I going to have a lot of problems cause the high miles??

What kind of preventitive maintenace things should I do if I get the car? Brakes and trans service was just done by mitsubishi.

Any people on here with high mileage MRs?

Honestly if I spend the kind of money they cost new I would probably buy something else. Such as a 2013 Mustang GT Premium.

Why do you say stay away?

You can't compare a Mustang and an MR, they are 2 completely different cars..

I would also stay away from it.

I never compared the mustang to the MR. I said if I was going to spend the money that a new MR costs I would probably buy a brand new GT for cheaper then a new MR costs.

You both say stay away.....can you give reasons?

I just checked trade in value on the 08 with 86k miles.....it shows $21.5 in GOOD condition.

Basically, while yes, the disclosing of the pump going out was good...One of the main issues that steered me away from the MR in general is the transmission...Any used Evos should be approached with caution though, because let's face it, they were probably modded before, and beat on...

But if you insist

The biggest thing I can say is the 08's have a few common issues. You will also be looking at a repair right away on the AWC and PDR. You could get an Evo 8 or 9 for around the same price and not have to spend the money right away on repairs and also have less miles.

Other thing to look at is the fact that its an Evo with 90K miles. It was probably driven pretty hard for those 90K. The trans repair on an SST is extremely expensive. Was/Is it modded? What kind of person is the owner? If its modded and the owner is on the younger side, you can guarantee that it has been driven hard in its lifetime. I would continue doing research. You can fine a decent Evo X in the $20-30K price range that won't be as beat up that can be a decent car.

I would also say that depending on whether the area of Missouri you live in gets snow or not, the Mustang would not be a good choice. Overall though, I do understand wanting a Mustang as I also would like one but with me in Wisconsin I can only drive about 4-5 months a year, where the Evo I could drive all year. And no one said you have to get the MR, get the GSR and prices are comparable between the Mustang GT and Evo.

Overall, it scares me to look at used Evo's. Mostly because I know how a lot of people drive them pretty hard. In the end its your money and your choice, but I would probably stay away as well.

$15000 is super cheap for a MR though.

Why not take it to a good tuner shop/dealership and get it looked over to make sure nothing else is wrong with it.

$2000 for a new pump installed and $15k for the car.. $17k for a high mileage MR is a good deal.

cheap indeed. i would try to even get it down lower pointing out the mileage and how most buyers won't jump on it then you'll have a cushion of savings for repairs.

maybe also look into some sort of 3rd party extended warranty. if you got some sort of insurance like that then if the tranny blew you would be all good even with a high deductible. just read the fine print before purchase.

The car is completely stock. The owner now has had it for the last 40k miles and has probably about $7000 worth of service/maintence work from mitsuibishi. He said he has put a lot of miles on it from traveling so much. I was thinking I may buy the car and build it up.

I dont want a GSR. Ive owned manual transmission cars since I was 16 and no longer intrested in them. I plan on daily driving this car too BTW.

It sounds like your pretty hellbent on getting it - just get somebody that is trustworthy and knowledgeable about the car to check it out... Or else your bound to get a headache full of problems...

Lol. Keep your money, don't even think about it. Spend the extra money and get something with less miles or like you said, get a mustake.

I wasn't saying get a new one I said look for a newer one..like a 2k10 or something....reason it scares me is 90k is a lot of miles...do you know what has been replaced on the car if anything? also you would want to automatically get an sst oil cooler and get that pump replaced...like others said if you are able get a reputable tuning shop to look at it..not joes muffler shack..but a legit shop which deals with evos

like this for example....even though its a salvage title...at this point you aren't looking for resale when guying an evo with 90k on it...so an evo with 60k and a salvage title is not any worse...looks like the sst would need rebuilt...which you might have to do anyways on the other one...just something to think about
