4wd service required

Hi guys, I know this is a noob question and there might already be hundreds of posts on this, but my 4WD service light came on today

I have just over 50k on it, what kinda of service do I need to do?
Should I bring it to a dealership? Is it just changing the transmission fluid and the dif fluid?

I also heard a few other owners say even after changing the fluid the light doesn't go off, they ended up changing the AYC pump which cost them 3,000

I'm just worried and confused, any help guys?

How did the light go on in the first place?
Is ur car sst? I heard Mitsu has to reset it when changing fluids

I was under the impression there was no service warning for trans fluid and diff fluids

My 4wd is due to a broken steering sensor
First step would be to check the fuse lol

Mines a 5 speed transmission. And it just came on today while I was on the highway :/

Is it a good idea to change fluid at a dealer? Don't like getting ripped off

Please go get the code read and tell us what it is. Then we can be a lot more helpful. In the US, almost any car-parts place will do this for you for free. I hope the same is true up there. If not, there are plenty of people with code-readers in Toronto.

+1 on getting a code number and that could be your ACD pump going out i think the code for that is C161E but i could be wrong

Ok guys, quick update.

Went to the dealership this morning, they told me I either need to replace the AWD pump, or it's a simple reflash of the software. So I had them check it out.

The code it came out with was: c161 E

So they did a quick reflash and costed me 60$. Before I left, the service guy told me it solved the problem for now, the "4WD system required" light turned off. However, he said if I drive later, and the "Tarmac gravel snow" light starts flashing, then it's actually a "C161F" code, and I'll have to replace the AWD pump.

So I drove for a bit, I was on "snow" setting. It sarted to blink after 2 minutes in the road, blinks for 10 seconds, then the blinking stops. This continued for the remainder of the drive, blinking every 5 minutes or so.

Called the guy back from dealership, told me the bad news, I need to replace the pump. Quoted me 3000 just for the pump it self!

Guys, please, I need serious help!!!!

Is there a cheaper way if fixing this???

IMO, they owe you the $60 back, since a reflash had no chance of fixing your problem.

Time to start reading:

And watching:

OP please see my thread above. I had the same "flash" that you're probably referring too. Odds are it is the ACD pump, the C161E is a pump failure, C161F indicates that there is a fault some where in the ACD pump.

This might be a long shot but has anyone filed a complaint with nhtsa? If we can get enough complaints we might be able to get a recall. Just a thought.

I just filed a complaint and I saw two other complaints about this issue. Send in your complaints and let's get this issue recalled.

Seems this issue is only affecting ppl living in winter climates? You think mitsu would put some kind of shielding around the pump to protect it from the elements.

But yes this should definitely become a recall!

Do you mind sending me the link to where you posted up the complaint? I would file a complaint in a heartbeat!!! I'm sure there are SEVERAL other people who would as well.

I personally haven't heard of any failures anywhere below the North Carolina line. The flash that I got is only for vehicles from VA and above, to include all of Canada and the midwestern states such as Colorado, the Dakota's and so on.
