how long should the car warm up for and sit for ?

I've been hearing people talk about how the car has to warm up untill half temperature. Is that mandatory or could it just warm up a little bit? And lets say your driving and you got to where you want to be, do you sit there for how long before you turn it off?

that is way overkill. I always let it "warm up" for about 1 minute before I start moving. Then I drive it gently until it gets up to temp.

You dont have to let her warm up but, keep in mind when you drive that boost pressures need to remain LOW until you reach operating temp. High boost pressures on cold pistons result in ring failures and piston damage. Other than driving her easy on start up your completely fine dude. Just be easy until shes ready to slam, just get to know her with her moods and likes/dislikes and youll never have a problem.

I agree that it isn't necessary. But I've always let it sit and warm up until the water temp reads several bars in on the dash. I'm at 50k miles on my '08 gsr and just ran a compression test and the numbers were great. So I think I'm going to continue to let it warm up. Yes this does mean sitting idling for 5+ minutes in the winter.

In the summer I usually sit in my car for a minute or two before gently driving off, it won't see higher RPM's or anything past a feathered throttle until it it gets up higher into operating temperature.

In the winter time I'll run it for 15 minutes, and sometimes need to do that several times a day (that's to keep the oil in the pan moving, to make sure the battery doesn't die, thaw the windows, and most importantly, make sure that it's semi-warm or at least almost ready to start warming up once I hop in... it gets really cold here lol).

Also I'm pretty sure our cars have fans that will automatically turn on to cool the engine/turbo once the car is off if it needs to. I usually just turn the car off when I get where I need to be but it's not bad practice to let it run for a min or two before shutting it down, I don't cause it's not necessary most of the time. But if you're worried about a turbo timer or turbo timing, if our car needed one, I'm sure it would have come with one. Just don't boost hard and park right afterward.

I just installed an oil pressure gauge and started waiting until the oil pressure comes down some. Let's me know the oil is getting warm and gives it time to get oil back into the engine.

If you just turn it on and take off, all the oil is sitting in the pan.

I usually just let it warm up till I see the temp bar goes up 1 unit and then drive off to work but staying under boost till it reaches full temp.

This is something I've been wondering too. I don't dd it so typically when I go somewhere in it its not somewhere I have to be in a hurry so I let it warm up to or near operating temp. I hate the feel of it when it's not up to temp, it feels like it's running so rich its got weights dragging behind it.

I usually wait for a single bar to show up on the temp gauge and then go on my way. You should remember that the tranny isnt warming up when the car is just sitting. Best way is to drive it easy, without boost, until up to temp.

No warm up needed! That's an old habit for old cars with carburetors, they do however require a warm-up.

How many times has this been covered? OP please use search tool, or read the owners manual. It clearly states in the owners manual to wait until the first bar shows up on the coolant temp gauge.
