Service engine under boost

I looked around online for similar problems but didn't really turn up much, figured I'd go ahead and make a thread for it.

I've noticed sometimes when I reach full boost the "Service Engine" light will flash repeatedly(about 6 or 7 times in rapid sucession), and when you let off the throttle it stops. Most of the time it doesn't happen, but once every 2 or 3 weeks it'll do it when i'm gettin' down on it. Can someone explain what's happening? And a method to make it STAHP.

I have never encountered this in my X but in one of my old IX's the service engine light would blink at WOT and high boost if I was hitting fuel cut. hope this gives you a place to start.

If you are tuned, google "Tephra Mod". It blinks to let you know that there is knock present.

Excuse my inexperience, but i'm new to tuning evo's, what does Tephra mod actually do for you? How is it useful in my case?

Tephra is the screen name of the guy who did a lot of the early ECU hacking on the Evo X

whoever owned the car before you has had the ECU reprogrammed. Part of the feature programmed into it is that the check engine light will flash when the engine detects knock. It's a safety feature. We commonly refer to is as a "Tephra Mod" since he pioneered it, along with a few other things like on the fly map switching.

Where did you get the car? What mods are on it? You need to make sure the tune is correctly matched to the existing mods or you risk engine damage.

Here is a link to my mods list:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...edemption.html

I got it from a dealership, 74k miles, all the mods seem to be very good parts and the previous owner even kept a lot of service records/receipts. I feel like it was taken good care of, I'm assuming the previous owner had it tuned good in New York (I live in NC). I'm still planning to research and learn the best way to approach this. Some have told me to send the tune I have to someone to look at...sound about right? Before I buckle down and drop 500 on a tune...see if it's in need of one.

Thanks for the halp!

I don't know enough about the Evo 8/9 to be much help there, but there are some really good tuner/vendors on here that I'm sure will look it over for you

Yeah man a flashing CEL indicates knock and is a dead giveaway of the Tephra mod. Its always nice when someone else does all the spending on parts for ya, you just purchase the whip and row through the gears; however, not knowing exactly what is done and knowing signs of abuse is a no go.

When buying a modded EVO its critical that you take the time to look over is extensively...in and out...doing whatever double checks you can with the time that is available to you, sometimes you'll get a deal but more often than not you'll stumble on a good lookin EVO because someone wanted an upgrade, or more likely, there was an issue the previous owner did feel like dealing with.

I would highly suggest that you comb through every nook and cranny of that car looking for mods, user modifications, spliced or cut wires, wear/condition of suspension and drivetrain components...just to name a few. Then I would, even if she runs like a champ or has no issues what-so-ever, take her to a tuner and re-flash the MAP....
