I drive an older Evo IV as my DD and I have no issues. It does kind of suck in traffic because the clutch isn't the lightest, the engine isn't the most flexible and the ride is harsh (but not that bad at all as long as you don't have coilovers with a high spring rate or something). The X is a much much more subdued car. It is softer, has all sorts of modern comforts, and is quieter so I don't see you having any issues. Newer Evos have much more reasonable service schedules and reliability as well. The only things I would caution you on would be aggressive cams, a racing/high performance clutch and lightened flywheel, none of which you should need for bolt-ons. I would say go for it!

 

Evo X makes a great, fun DD. MPG and noise not like a Prius but that's to be expected. 4 doors and good interior space help with regular stuff but trunk is cramped.

 

The evo doesn't really make a good DD. The low displacement + turbo means it sucks driving in vacuum. If you live anywhere with lots of hills you'll get annoyed fast cuz you have to either go into boost or rev it higher than normal to maintain speed. My next car will probably be a higher displacement 4 cyl (came from a 2.3L MS3 before this, there's definitely a difference in vacuum drivability) or something with at least 6 cyl.

I've had both a GSR and a MR and wish I could go back to the GSR, the MR just doesn't have the same *fun* feeling that I got from the GSR. In traffic the MR can be annoying sometimes as it will downshift at odd times and make a clunk that you can really feel and other cars can probably see.

It's a great DD in the winter however. There's been a few blizzards where I've been able to just drive out (with winter tires) of snow up to half way on my door.

The gas mileage also sucks. You can improve it a bit with mods, a tune, and driving habits.

 

Yup.. I'm still on my factory clutch with Cobb Stage 2, it holds strong. I just wouldn't recommend any launches. I only launched twice in the history of the car.. and while it is epic, it will ruin the stock clutch pretty easily - especially with increased hp/tq.

I Enjoy Driving it everyday. i think it's fun to drive, and it's nice to have that power right at my finger tips!

 

What's traffic?

 

I don't see anything wrong with the Evo in traffic. Traffic sucks nomatter what car you are in. I guess if you have a GSR it may suck worse than a MR but no worse than other sticks. Although traffic can be a little more enjoyable if you have a test pipe and a Prius behind you, but maybe it's only me that gets a kick out of that. I DD mine. I have almost 40k miles in a little less than two years. It's just too much fun to drive. I look for reasons to go someplace just to drive.

Maybe the reviewers are too sensitive or maybe I have always been the type to sacrifice comfort and functionality for something I enjoy and now I don't even realize I'm sacrificing anything. When I took my Ducati for a canyon run I would be in so much pain that about halfway home I sometimes hardly had the strength to pull the clutch in. But I wouldn't have charged it for the world.

 

Although I understand the thought process, new cars aren't investments. You buy it to enjoy it not to save it for the next guy. What's the saying "it's like having a hot girlfriend you never have sex with to save her for her next boyfriend." Or something like that. My theory keep it maintained, clean and drive the heck out of it. Let chips fall where they may at resell time. It drives me nuts when somebody with two cars let's the Evo sit all week and drives their junker instead. Make every day an Evo day. 40 grand and all the mods to let her sit unseen undriven in the garage? That should have been Einstein's definition of crazy.

 

Same here but I do every 3000 to 3500 and use royal purple filter. Probably doesn't matter with how often we change oil but I just get the royal purple filter because it was the most expensive one, it's pretty and the weight of it always seems to be the talking point at the place I take it to , to change the oil.

And please for heavens sake, don't get a car capable of the hp and handling of the Evo and say the most irritating 3 letters. MPG!

That's why I bought a Hummer H1. I now use the Evo as my good MPG vehicle. Although swiping my card 3x at the pump just to fill up with ~45gal of diesel is pretty comical.

 

Nice. Always liked those. My second favorite off road vehicle next to Land Rover. But I would love one if for nothing more than to **** of the global warming hoax crowd. So unpractical on the street it's amazing. Wanted a Unimog at one time as well.

 

I, from time to time will drive my wife's MR daily for a week or two at a time in the Columbus, OH area. I have a hard enough time with my Subaru in traffic, in that everyone wants to race you. And it's 100 times worse in her Evo. I get Colbalts and Accords, red lining their engines to keep up & make sure I know they aren't impressed with my fast little car.
As far as the car it's self goes, I have no qualms. It's the attention it draws from the other jackholes on the road that make it almost not worth taking it out. Almost.

 

I have MAX CO2 as my licence plate. It's great parking in the "fuel efficient vehicle" parking spots.

 

I have an 11 GSR with full bolt ons and open tune. Around mid 3's for whp. Also upgraded the suspension. To be honest - its a love hate relationship. When I feel like tearing around corners or some stupid kid tries to pass me.. Love it! but at the same time when I am tired, coming home from work or just trying to go to dinner - i don't always want to race. gets annoying.

I have the heated leather/sunroof. Without those options - i would probably have another DD. The interior and no 6th gear gets to you

That's great. At one time when I had all my dogs I wanted a ford Excursion and wanted a plate named after the Exxon Valdez.

As far as Evo and people wanting to race. I learned to not even make eye contact. Although I can't tell you how many times I got starteled driving along and some horrible sounding Honda with a huge exhaust just redlined it next to me. Had a beat up Accura driving next to me for a mile. I knew what was up but I kept cruising at 40. Funny thing is he downshift and floors it and it took him 100 yards to get a car length on me and I never changed speeds. I just kept cruising. What I want to know is are they just trying to see "the Evo go" or do they have no clue what the evo would do to them? I lean towards they just want to see the ego go. I assume if they are into imports they must know they are punching outside their weight with a basically stock civic or Honda.

But I don't mind the attention. I have a M3 and a 135 by my house that we always seem to pass going opposite directions and they make sure to rev. Actually the 135 chased me down one day. He had to make a U turn to do it. Every light he would get next to me a rev a little. When he realized I wasn't going to play he finally said "nice car" and drove off.

I'm 43 and as much as I loved my Rovers and BMWs no car has made me feel so good for so long. I hate mornings but knowing that I'm driving the Evo to work makes them much better. After a long day I love getting in and starting it and relaxing while it warms up. I can even tolerate traffic because it give me more time in the Evo. I hope this feeling lasts. I have never paid a car off because I get bored after a few years and trade it in. I have always dreamt of no car payment. Could this be the one? If this is truely the last Evo they make it would help. No temptation. Nothing to make it look dated even though I don't even find the older ones dated.

The great thing is, nobody I work with understands my love for my Evo. They just see it as a "fast and furious" car for kids. But I know why I love it and it's not about the badge on the hood, it's not about being surrounded by pretty leather. Not about the gas mileage or trunk space. It's not about fitting in, in a highly materialistic community or showing how "successful" I am, and it's not about attracting girls. If a girl is determining what car you drive. Turn your man card in immediately. it's 100% about the driving experience and if somebody doesn't understand that then they aren't car people anyways and no sense me trying to convince them. You either get it or you don't.
