Please help a newbie out.
Hey everyone,
I just bought my evo x a couple of days ago. I'm new to the modding community and I was hoping you all could shed some light on some questions I have.
Here's the deal. I want to have this puppy running near/over 400 hp. My question is, what mods do I need to get me there? What are the most reliable brands to chose? Can I tune the car myself (using a Cobb for instance)?
Please don't use any abbreviations because I probably won't get them at first. I appreciate your knowledge and I know I could just google this but you guys have first hand experience and I figured you all would love to talk about this.

Well, there's many options out there and there are several reliable brands to choose from. AMS and ETS are the two most common companies people pick to buy parts from.
As for what supporting mods you want: you can install all of the basic bolt ons (intake, exhaust, intercooler, piping, etc) and run e85 fuel, then you should be around the 400hp goal. (I could give you some more specific parts if you'd like, that's just a brief summary.)
Yes, theoretically speaking, you can "tune" the car yourself using programs like EvoScan. However, I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you feel comfortable to do so because it's pretty easy to mess up your car if you make a mistake tuning it. There are YouTube videos with tutorials explaining how to tune a Evo yourself and you could always ask others for help if you run into any issues along the way. An access port is another tool you can use for your Evo.
Of course, there are many ways to do this and there are many possibilities, but that's a simplified explanation for you.
ALSO:
If you're going to be tracking this car, then please mod your car accordingly, lol. It's important to have a goal in mind (track car, daily driver reliable, drag strip car, etc) and then mod the car in preparation for that specific goal. I know that seems like common sense but you'd be surprised.

As was said, I wouldn't tune the car myself, it is pretty easy to ruin an expensive toy that way.
If you don't have E85 readily available to you, the other mod path would be full bolt-ons (turbo-back exhaust, intercooler, intake), upgraded fuel system (fuel pump and larger injectors, 1000cc+), and an upgraded turbocharger. 400whp is easily reached with a decent stock frame turbo upgrade, such as the CBRD BBX or the MHI 18k.

its higher ethanol content and octane basically-
the basics are-
you can make more power- but requires more fuel volume to do so- has combustion benefits as well-
its not something generally you want to use unless you have ready access to it- because switching back and forth from normal fuel to high % ethanol means the mixtures are never the same twice-

E85 is the fuel used on flex fuel vehicles. in Austin there is a good number of stations that has it.

Make the trip to Kozmic Motorsports in Houston, they are the best in the area to my knowledge.
If you have an MR, they are the ONLY place to take your car to.
