Weird motor whine??

I dont kno if its the cold weather or not, but when i start my car i get this weird whine that sounds like a bad ps pump (not loud but noticeable). It is motor dependent. Meaning, when im at a standstill and rev my motor, i can hear it. When im driving, i can hear it. So it doesnt matter if its in gear or not. Any ideas?? Ill probably take a video, but its reay not loud, and might be just me being picky.

Btw, its a 2012 with only 21xxx miles. All fluids were changed at 17xxx miles, n engine oil changed 2000 miles ago

I don't know if we're talking about the same whine but I have a wine that comes from the engine bay. Mine its most noticeable at 3800 rpm. But I think it's normal, or no?

Take it in to your dealership, it should be warranty.
A whine can be from anything that rotates with the engine.

I was told it was the accy belt. It goes away when warm weather returns...

I have another belt - maybe I will just swap it in to see if it does fix it...

Idler pulley

There is a shop that sells an improved metal pulley set(including accy belt, the pulleys come from a Hyundai I believe). Can't remember who makes it, but i had the same problem as OP mentioned. Swapped the pulleys and haven't heard the noise since.

EDIT: KaizenTuning sells it

You could just get the one idler pulley that is causing the 'death whine', i suppose. But i figured I would just replace all of them and forget about them.

Mine also whines, was told it is normal by my shop. Haven't seen that Kaizen belt package until today, so no idea if it works or not but I actually am thinking about trying that myself

It cured my problem. I had the same whine at cold startup. Sounded almost exactly like a PS pump; the sound was RPM dependent.

Here is a video that I stumbled across on another evo forum that made me suspect that it was the Idler pulley. This is exactly how mine sounded before I replaced the pulleys.

have the same noise. not as pronounced as the one in the vid as it is very faint but you can definitely hear it. Is it going to cause problem if not replaced?

At first neither was mine. It got a lot worse over time.

Considering those pulleys power your water pump, i'd say so.

From what I've heard, the recall only replaces the belt and a washer/shim I believe? I'm not sure since I have no idea what the recall includes. 'll let someone else chime in on that. I would still rather have metal pulleys over plastic ones.

You might as well go in for the recall or have the dealer fix it. After all it's free parts and labor.

If the noise continues then consider spending your hard earned money.

The recall says that they will replace the pulley too if needed. Would prefer the metal one too but will see if the new plastic one quiets it down.
