Buying my first Evo

Hey guys Im looking for some help about buying a used 2008 GSR. This is my first evo and im not sure what I should look for and what question I should ask when Im at the dealership. I know my way around a car so the basic I can check but wasn't sure if there would be something specific i should look for or ask when I go see the car this weekend.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mileage - what is it?

If close to 100k demand timing chain replacement. Any maintenance records you can secure are good. Take pictures of the engine bay on here so people can tell you what mods it might have if any. Check under the car to see how badly it's corroded.

Few things off the top of my head, others will chime in.

Mileage is key, let us know that and we can advise further.

109xxx the dealer does not have any pics of the engine bay and I won't be able to go see it until this Saturday. I know its been modified because there is an exhaust (not sure what but i will find out and there is a competition clutch sticker in the truck on the back of the rear seat). Im glad they have timing chains, I've heard they are much better than belts...is that true with evo's?

I'll get the pics and post back thanks again.

Yes and no. Prior to 2011 the timing chain is prone to stretching as I understand it. Hopefully some people with 08 EVO's can chime in with their input. I'd insist on a timing chain install with that many miles or walk away imo. (minimum)

Thats good advice...I definitely don't want the headache. The engine bay looks clean with little mods...oil catch pan aftermarket intake and intercooler piping...Am i missing anything?

I'm no EVO expert. I'd post this over at:

http://www.boostedforum.com/

and also

http://evoxforums.com

This way more people will respond and give you feedback before you spend any money.

Good luck!

I would try to find a evo with lower miles. The bov to atmosphere is not a good idea. Also, side note, the oil "catch can" you have to be carful. Maybe the car has too much blow by. I've seen people add them on worn out motors for that reason. Just saying. Good luck

just check the boost control solenoid and see if its stock or aftermarket, if its aftermarket ask if they had the car tuned, or if they will let you, see if its tuned yourself. Aftermarket EBCS can cause overboosting without a tune.

Also the timing chain and ACD pump are common to go out on these. The ACD pump especially in cold places ( I see snow )

When buying used cars I always asked for all factory repair/recalls done and then a proper leak down test.

If you're not sure what to look for, take someone that does. Even if you have to pay them. Better safe than sorry

Pay to have a PPI. Make sure they give you all the specs. Including rotor measurements. I forgot to measure my rotors and they where under spec, rotors are not cheap!
