Smile Deciding on the "Perfect Evo X" for me.

I've been through a lot of turmoil trying to decide on the perfect X for me, it's been a rough ride so far and I can't seem to settle on one. I'm leaning on the MR version of an 08+ and its tough to find one in decent condition with low mileage.

Any tips on what I should be looking out for? I know I want a White or a Black, however I'm not too picky.

Anyhow, thanks for reading my rant ;]

If I were to buy a used Evo, I would avoid one with any of these three:

1) The CarFax report doesn't show frequent maintenance. A poorly maintained car means big dollars on the repair;

2) Bumpers, doors, and fenders with inconsistent reflection that indicates past damage, or interior smell indicates past floor or fire;

3) A cheap and/or dirty aftermarket intake air filter. The Evo comes with high-flow intake filter from the factory. If you've got to change it, you'd better change it to something better. A worse-than-factory filter says something about the previous owner's street r̶a̶c̶e̶r̶ ricer mentality, and how he just doesn't care about his car.

I was also considering an Evo X MR but after reading through the tc-sst thread, I kind of changed my mind. I really want the MR but the maintenance cost and the great possibility that the transmission will blow up is making me lean towards the GSR. what did you decide to get?

Great possibility the transmission will blow up?

rofl

what threads are you reading? That only happens due to a horrible tuner, or putting too much power to the transmission without supporting mods.

I have read that some ppl needed to replace their SSTs with only 40k miles on a bone stock evo and RA. Also, even if it doesn't need replacement, 5k to rebuild the SST is also expensive IMO. I understand that you have a MR, how many miles do you have right now?

26k trouble free miles and I have read a ton of evo information and sites and haven't seen a large number of people with premature failures or needs to rebuild.

Now I HAVE seen people that exceed 350tq on their stock clutch packs run into problems, or people that have their MR tuned by a tuner that has no clue how to tune for an SST, and those people will definitely have problems too.

Honestly if you treat it right, maintain it, and don't overdo the tq without supporting mods you can run this transmission for a long long time from what I have seen. Many 100k+ MR's out there without issues.
