cold start, 1st to 2nd is rough.

Hi everyone. I searched the forum first, like a good noob. Hard to come up with specifics without knowing exactly what to search for. Anyway, quick question. On cold start going from 1st to 2nd is often times tough. It does not want to go into 2nd easily, and often creates buzz feedback in hand. Not grinding like a misshift or something. But definitely not pleasant. As soon as oil reaches fully warmed up temps it is fine. I also noticed if I double clutch it goes into 2nd smooth too.

I am reading and it seems like it is normal? I only have 2k miles. Wanted to know if its something I should bring to my dealers attention or if it really is normal.

Thanks so much!

Simple. Don't drive the car without warming it up. It is good practice anyway to let it warm up a little before driving.

Change the transmission fluid. You can get aftermarket shifter bushings as well.

It's less about the bushings (when it's cold anyway), and more about the transmission fluid. It's a little hard to warm that up too, while just idling. I suggest your best result will be found through a swap to the Redline cocktail. You can buy this anywhere, but MAP has a nice kit.

Mine went away after installing a short shifter.

Tried that. Letting it idle for 10 minutes doesn't do much. And its not always a convenient to be sitting for ten minutes.

Car is fully stock, and I was wondering if its an issue. If it is, I'd rather have Mitsubishi correct the issue on their dime. Thanks everyone.

short shifter also seemed to help mine and warming it up also helped...It should get a little better once its broken in more...the redline cocktail actually made the shifting a little rougher on cold start but I only tested it once or twice so it might just be me but im going back to OEM again...also my heavywheight shiftknob helped a TON.

I don't have an X, but I have the same problem with my 9. I have a short throw shifter, underhood bushing, shifter bushing, redline cocktail and I still experience it.

I actually grinded 2nd today because I wasn't paying attention and tried shifting too slowly after driving for only 5 minutes.

The only way around it for me is to shift very fast at around 4k RPM till I've been driving the car for > 20 minutes. I usually just skip over 2nd until the car warms up...

Yes, 10 minute idle is not good. Seems like other members have already given good advice. Try it out and see if it works or not. Fluid change, bushing, short shifter... maybe it'll go away on its own

Pretty common issue there is no for sure fix I wouldn't waste your time with the dealer. You could try the fluid to see if that helps I had the same issue the fluid didn't really do anything you just learn to deal with it more or less...Some people say the more the car breaks in the easier the shifting will become.

Thanks. If its just an annoyance, I am OK with it. I was worried it was a precursor for something else and perhaps trans issue were coming. Sounds like its just annoying and not much more?
