Conventional vs synthetic oil

Getting ready to do the first oil change on my 2015 Evo. I've heard that I need to use conventional oil for the first 10K and then switch to synthetic after that. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

I would just use synthetic..

The car comes factory filled with synthetic, and it requires synthetic. Put synthetic oil in it. Whoever told you that 10k rule, you should not take any automotive advice from them.

It irritates me to see these threads with 10k oil.

Your oil is the best and most important thing for a healthy engine. Please keep it clean.

Dont be that guy who lets it get pure black before changes.

Rodbearings are a very soft material and need the best lubrication.

Quality and clean oil.

to the person who told you that...... Once you put synthetic in the car you REALLY shouldn't ever go with anything else and seeing how the car comes with synthetic you should stick with that. They come with Mobil1 for the break in, so just stick with that or Valvoline. Also the hell with that 10K crap too, 3k FTW

10k miles on reg oil? Yikes. Might want to run a search here and look at some info.

While that advice may have held true 20 years ago, machining (at the OEM level) is at a point where break-in oil isn't really required. Some engine rebuilders will still tell you to use conventional for an oil change or two before switching but that's still debatable.

No one suggested going 10k on one oil change. He was told to only run conventional for the first 10k. Reading comprehension...


Also, the once "once you go synthetic you can't go back" myth is complete BS.

I was under the impression they always were. As someone else stated, OEM built engines are designed for break-in on syn oil.

According to a lot of manuals, the 2011+'s came with conventional oil.. 2015 is showing the same thing.

That sounds familiar, I think at some point Mitsubishi pulled back on synthetic being mandatory.

I heard that as well.


I would also stick with a good quality synthetic, good filter, and just change it regularly. Your engine is never going to complain about having quality clean oil in it.

Nothing in the manual states the factory fill isn't synthetic. After googling this, all I found was internet hearsay... Nothing substantiated the claim that Mitsu stopped using Mobil1 for factory fill.

Just like you put premium gas in your car, you should put synthetic oil in it. Not sure where you heard it from or if something changed over the years but I would highly recommend using synthetic oil as soon as possible. There's no doubt that it will run so much smoother and it'll definitely be more beneficial in the long run.
