Back after 10 years... Some questions.

When the Evo X was announced, I was almost dead-set to get one. Ultimately, I stuck with my first love and bought an STI. But a decade goes by and things change, and now I'm looking at possibly getting an Evo X again. In my research I've come across a couple questions I am hoping someone can shed some light on.

I'm looking at SST models, specifically the 2010+ SE and MR.

First. In a few of the cars I've seen, one of the button blanks next to the AYC button behind the shifter have been removed. Is there a common mod that uses one of those spots? Or are they just easily punched out and lost?

Second. I've looked into the model year changes and the only real mechanical change I can see post-2010 is a timing chain update for late 2011. Is that the only mechanical update over the years?

Lastly, in researching the timing chain change, it looks like there was a change to the block. Is swapping the chain to the new one on a 2010 worthwhile? Or does the older oiler design make it moot?

Thank you for your advice.

I believe there was a change to the clutch basket for the 2012+ SST. Revised torque dampener I think was the change.

From what i understand the pre-2010 block has a weaker timing chain and an oil squirter for lubricating it. The 2010+ has a stronger chain and a well placed hole for oiling.

The difference between the two timing chains and how beefed up the "new" type is becomes blatantly obvious side-by-side. There should be plenty of comparison pictures available for you to sort though. It'd be worth your while to ensure that the car already has the updated chain - or that it gets it shortly after you take ownership.

Those little blanks you're talking about are pretty easy to pop out and lose. I can't think of any popular modifications that take the place of those keys.

Thanks for your help. Looks like getting a 2012+MR is the better idea. This car is going to see a lot of hard driving, so I want the more durable design.

Maybe keep an eye on the recently announced recall. Seems like to FE's are having some cooling issues.

Also, they don't have the Recaros obviously
