Busted piston but still ran for over a year

Finally decided to pull the engine out to build it. It was still running fine before pulling it out. To my surprise, the evo still made good power with only 3 cylinders. Check it out. Made 330 hp on EnglishRacings dyno 6 months ago which was low according to the tuner. Compression test shows 15% compression in cylinder 4 and.. well this is why.

That chunk went straight out the waste gate since the turbo was completely fine. Some minor dents on the cylinder head, valves were normal with 100% compression.
I got lucky that didn't mess anything else up, but just goes to show that the 4b11 is reliable even with 3 cylinders.. somewhat lol

i was wondering why, for the longest time, every time I start the car up it always sounds like a cylinder stutters.anyone wanna take a guess as to what could have caused this?

that big of a chunk made it to the waste gate with out touching anything? Wow how is that even possible?

You got lucky!

I'm pretty impressed. Hope you tear through it and make sure everything is still in good condition.

Almost exactly what mine did. This was a day where it made 517 on a mustang dyno through the SST trans though. I think a wastegate line came loose and it overboosted. Completely my fault. I knew it was pulling way harder than normal and the CEL flashed. I just stayed in it because...well it was pulling like a freight train.

Wow I didn't even know that could happen. Super lucky it missed the turbo though! What would cause such damage?

Casting flaw?

Remove the first cat and inspect the inlet - is the chunk there?
Maybe borescope the turbo too.

That is a big chunk to pass...

Running test pipes. I checked the turbo fins and it seems normal, no dents or damage. I doubt it thered be any damage inside as I ran for a good 6 months with low compression. I'm pretty sure I heard it go through the exhaust as I recall hearing metal pinging really loudly one day, I thought it was just a rock but, out goes the piston

Hey Brian, can i ask what mods you had on the car when you went in for the dyno?

Did you ever figure out what caused it?

alll the basic bolt-ons. 4in intercooler, 3port ebcs, blitz intake, ticp + licp, ets o2 dump downpipe, testpipe, hks catback, aem meth injection (50/50). All this while running 30 pounds boost @ 12.5AFR. Stock turbo/block. My tuner thinks it's a meth distribution problem, ran extremely lean in cylinder 4.

Meth injection is too unpredictable to trust it so much in order to reliably be running 12.5:1 AFR.
