Cone filter install - fixing the spinning bolt problem
Cone filter install - fixing the spinning bolt problem
I fell victim to the spinning screw that won't come out. If any of you are suffering from the screws by the MAF spinning and not coming out, try this fix. You will need:
A pocket knife, a flat bladed screw driver, philips screw driver, and a friend
The problem is the threaded metal fitting the screw fits into spins in the plastic airbox housing. To get around it, continue with the steps provided in cone airfilter install, and leave the back half of the airbox attached to the MAF. Once everything is removed, unplug the MAF and loosen the clamp behind it. This will allow you to pull both the MAF and airbox out of the car (making it easier to work on).
Once you have it out of the car, get a sturdy pocket knife and a flat bladed screw driver. Use the pocket knife to jimmy the bolt away from the plastic airbox flange. Then jam the flat bladed screw driver into the gap. Once you have done this, get your friend to slowly turn the bolt while you lever the sucker out of there. It takes a lot of force, and you will scratch the hell out of the bolt flange, but the bolt will slowly pull free along with the little brass fitting that was spinning in the airbox. I recommend unscrewing the bolt out of the fitting once you free it from the filter. vice grips work well.
This is the easiest way to get the bolt out without drilling. If you want to put the stock air box back on, just epoxy the brass fitting back into the airbox, and hammer it back into the hole you yanked it out of.
I hope this helps, let me know what problems you have.
