Glove box piston, what's it for??

So, I removed my glove box, and there was a piston attached to it, it was easy enough to maneuver it out of the way to get the glove box out completely, but the whol piston seemed to be pretty loose. When reinstalling the glove box, I couldn't clearly see where the piston was supposed to go.

So, my question is, what's this piston for, and how should it be reinstalled? As of right now it's just attached to my glove box, but nothing else, so I imagine its just going to rattle around in there.

Any help, photos, etc. would be really appreciated. Thanks!

It's just when you open the glove box it opens slowly, rather than falling on your lap/knees like the gloveboxes in the 80's used to do.

It's all to give the perception of an expensive car

Right, but if mine's not properly attached, it won't do anything but rattle around. Does anyone know where and how it's supposed to be attached?

Thanks!

It just keeps it from opening too far and dumping everything out. There is a little hook you connect it to

though the piston has two holes on one side, only one connects. Connect each side to the glove box and the under-dash, respectively.
