Break in question!

Hey guys, this may seem like a silly question. I just purchased a new 2013 gsr. The manual says not to exceed 5k rpm for the first 1000. I've been shifting just about at 3k rpm but I can feel that the car doesn't like it. So my question is when you were breaking in your new evo's what rpm were you shifting at?

There's always a different theory on this... I guess it just depends who you ask. Consider how many miles were on it when you purchased. Even if there was only 20 or 30, those very well could have been hard shifts at 7k! I stayed below 5k rpms for the first 500 miles

No point in really taking it above 5k anyways. There isn't much acceleration left after that

Shifting just feels notchy sometimes when I shift into third at around 3k rpm.

Not on stock tune, no. But you should have power after 5k on a good tune.

oh, yea.. my tranny is notchy. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is notchy and grindy if I shift steadily in a smooth/swift fashion. When I pause in neutral for a moment and then shift into gear its fine.
Coming to think of it, I'm gonna talk to the dealer about that.

I picked up a 13 Gsr also. I babied it and shifted below 5k as well for the first 500 miles. Then by the time it hit 1,000 miles, I was on the track already =D Your shifter problem..
I upgraded to the TWM short shifter, its much better overall. Shorter throws and much closer gears. Not like the sloppy oem shifter. This is my first non Honda vehicle as well.

The shifter feels pretty good to me, but of course the last car that I had to compare it to was a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3, definitely not known for easy or smooth shifts. We had a first gear that was almost useless.

3rd gear notch is an issue no matter what. A change to Redline fluids and WORKs short throw/bushings solved my issues.

I just got a 2013 GSR as well and followed the manual. Stayed under 5k rpms until 600 miles. I usually shift between 4k-5k rpms on my commute anyways. I shifted passed 6k, 7k rpms a few times after 1000 miles, and that's when I found out the torque is flat after 5k rpms haha.

Reason why you said "car doesn't like it" when you shift at 3k rpms is because boost won't kick in until 3500 rpms. This car shift so much smoother when you shift at over 4k rpms. Very notchy and grindy when you first start driving.

I did a 3000 miles break-in period. Well that was just me. Its all up to the driver though.

A large portion of Evo owners have this issue, it's "normal". As far as break in, I recommend following the manual. Also, change your oil at 1000 miles too.

Not trying to hijack your post but a friend did her first oil change at 3k miles. Although she did follow the 5k rpm limit for the first 1k miles.. Is this something to worry about? Does this mean that her engine will last much shorter than engines that changed oil at 1k miles? please somebody help

Would like to know as well. When to change first oil? 1k or 3k? Then after that at what?
