I notice on a lot of Evo pictures on here that you can see the IC piping next to the IC. I'm assuming they just removed the plastic piece next to the IC? How hard is that and are there any concerns with doing it?

Youll have to remove the front bumper. Removing the front bumper is very easy to do. Look under the How-to section for a guide.

Yes, extremely easy (once you take the bumper off of course).

I took the bumper off yesterday to install my AMS FMIC!!!! It took me 5-10 mins. I had taken it off before, but still, it is really easy and quick to do. I was going to take those out to try it, but totally spaced it because I was too excited.

^ +1 on it being easy, as long as your front end is lifted. I did it w/o jacks or stands (on stock height) & it was frustrating wedging my head underneath, at some points. I suggest not doing that, if possible, LOL.

Figured someone would have made the obvious point by now, but I guess not.

You need to realize those pieces are functional. They direct air into the intercooler, but are also quite effective at directing air to the oil cooler.

Really? they don't look functional. Are we talking about the same pieces? I am not talking about the inlet holes above the FMIC. I am talking about the flat plastic squares on the left and right of the FMIC.

OK, nice read. But wouldn't removing those pieces allow for more airflow to that area? without ever looking side I'd have to see how well those pieces are actually directing air as opposed to just being a hole for air to come through.

So in your opinion, people with aftermarket FMICs that have removed those pieces could have oil coolers running too hot?

There's a difference between "too hot" and "Not as cool as they could be". I doubt anyone will overheat because they removed those pieces, but the fact of the matter is, Mitsubishi designed those pieces to funnel air into the air cooler. Removing them most likely disrupts this flow. Full stop.

I'm guilty of it too; I removed my wing. I disliked it. But I weighed the dislike of the wing against the added downforce and made my choice.

I personally think the front of the car looks better with those pieces removed, but have honestly just forgot to remove them each time I had my front apart.
