You can use it to read AFR from the OBD but OEM sensors are narrow band so its pretty much useless. I cant speak for why a company decides not to do something.

or you connect your wideband 0-1v out to the ecu instead of the narrowband. And read that through OBD, should work I think.

For the most part you don't need anything unless you want the other readings like oil pressure/temp, water temp, and accurate boost psi. You'll need other parts for the temp sensors. However it can be used as is.
