One could definitely be made out of carbon, but not my design as it is. That is for someone else to delve in to, as I don't work with carbon..lol

Would doing this to your car pose any risks when it rains if you are running an open style intake?

Is there any way to get the duct like in the very first pictures posted in the thread? Just the black duct? If so, where? I like the FQ400 setup option. It seems like a great place just based on gut feeling. Has anyone seen any air flow tests on the FQ400 though?

This was tried on many 350Zs and there's no risk involved. Not enough water gets through the vent. The few drops that does makes no difference.

we tested by driving an AEM cold air intake Z through a deep puddle of water, filter was good. The only time the filter soaked some water was by hosing the filter down. So I wouldn't worry about the few drops going through the vent.

I'm more worried about when it's raining and you are driving through it. I guess to be super safe you could always keep a roll of blue painters tape and just tape the hole up if you have to drive through the rain.

I would like to see actual tests done with this on a car to see how water gets sprayed through the hole opening and what the water does.

Rain isn't going to do anything. If your intake pipe sucks up a puddle like a straw, then you will have problems. The intake is okay to get wet and even a little rain/moisture gets into your engine, it will burn it up.

Definitely interested if it was carbon fiber - even maybe at least in appearance.

I understand your apprehension. Don't get me wrong. But I have literally driven 60MPH for an hour straight through TORRENTIAL downpoars since I installed mine without any issues whatsoever. Everyone in this thread saying there is zero danger shy of running your car in to a river is correct. Water would have to completely inundate the filter, be pulled in to the compressor housing of the turbocharger and not get instantly atomized by the 100k rpms the wheel can spin, fill up the intercooler completely with water so much that it runs out of the outlet, and run uphill from the LICP in to the throttle body. Water getting in to your intake is not something people should worry about at all.

I don't know if it was mentioned/ explained already, but how did you cut the opening in the bumper...did you do it yourself or take it to a shop?

When I did my Z a long time ago, the duct came with a template that you transfer. Then you drill holes for the rivets, and cut out the hole for the duct with a razor or exacto knife. It was scary but easy. If I remember correctly I heated the bumper up a bit with a hair dryer to make it softer/easier to cut.

Almost the same process. I designed a template with it. Just tape it on where it goes and cut with an exacto. Super easy.
