To the extent that people see any performance gain when they switch from the OE air-filter to one that is less restrictive, such as a K&N - and I believe that evidence of some gain exists - there will be a loss in performance when the air-filter gets wet. I agree that the risk of hydrolock is near nil, but that doesn't mean that letting water get to the filter won't lower performance.
