Warping of OEM Discs

Any body have problems with OME brake discs warping?

Mine have gone after 5000 miles .... must be a defect. I drive the car quite hard, but never been on the track and it is an EVO X after all!

The Warping has caused a oscillating squeak when not braking!

Mine are perfect, even after 10,000 miles.

No problems here. Are you on the brakes immediately after some prolonged hard braking at a stand still?

You sure they're warped? Might just be some excess pad material built up on the rotor. I ran 15 trackdays on my stock rotors and they didn't warp.

Just a thought.

Put a very agressive race pad on the car for a day or two to utilize their abrasiveness to "clean" the rotor of uneven pad transfer. You are probably exceeding the heat capabilities of the stock pads. Upgrade to a higher operating temp street pad.

Torque of the wheel plays a part in how true the rotor stays. If the wheels have been just 'put on with an air gun' then they are probably overtorqued or torqued-lopsided. If they have been torqued properly either with a torque wrench or a torque-stick then the problem might lie in the rotors themselves. Food for thought.

^ Yep, the Brembos have always been very sensitive to being properly and evenly torqued. IT's easy to warp them if you don't torque them properly.

Just went past 12,500 miles, no warping issues.

If you drive the car hard and you stop immediately, you can get a rotor warp easy. Where are the pads covers the rotos, the rotor can't cool down equally with the rest of the rotor.
Some extra ordinary cases you can actually "weld" them together

Or you can torque the wheels down badly too.

In a related question, why is there no set screw to secure the rotors?

No. Race pads or any other pads will do nothing once the rotor warps. The only thing that will fix the warped rotor is turning the rotor.

No. Whether the wheel is torqued at 60ftlbs or 200ftlbs will make no difference. You could hand tighten the lugs and the rotor will not move around like you are claiming. For what you are saying will happen, the wheel would've already flown off.

Edit: torque sticks are horrendous and have be proven to not torque evenly. An impact with a socket gives more of an even torque. That isn't from me, it's from snap-on.

Would be good to know mate....... I might be having the same issue as you ! But I only get the squeak when i am not braking! Is that the same?

When i get in the car in the morning everything is okay ...... but about 10-15 min later, when I get on the highway (70mph) i can hear a squeak squeak squeak (3 or 4 per second) sometimes, but not all the time .......it is only faint. If I press the brake, the noise goes away, but comes straight back.

Mitsubishi told me I had damaged the pads and discs by braking too hard.... I just pointed the badge at the back of the car and said "its an Evo" I've not done anything to it that should cause it a problem!!

Anyway, Ralliart said that it was unlikely that I would have damaged the system so the dealer refinished the discs for free but wanted to charge for new pads. Again, Ralliart said that there was no need to change the pads just yet, but I should see how it goes!

Anyway, one day in and it is squeaking again, but not as loud and not nearly as much ..... will see how it goes.... I'd put my money on the pads!
