Going for a more comfortable ride.
I would try a different tire. I had some all-seasons on when I got the car, and they pretty much ruined the way the car handled and felt, every pot-hole and manhole cover felt jarring. Now with some dunlop direzza's I can still feel those bumps but it feels like I'm rolling over them and not smashing into them with my rims. I drive a 9 and not a X but I'm pretty sure that bad(or maybe just all all-season tires) can ruin the comfort of your ride.
There's not much you can do to gain comfort without sacrificing the car's oem engineering.
Here is my advice:
1. Keep stock suspension
2. Get 255/40/18 all-season tires
If that doesn't do it for you, it might be time to look into another vehicle.

Actually the sidewall will be a little taller. The profile (40) is a % of the width, therefore the 255/40/18 tire is taller than the 245/40/18. The sidewall will be able to work a little more and decrease harshness, and the tires will fit fine on your oem wheels.
). as far as thickness, like xrims mentioned, it depends on your tire width and the % for the sidewall.
