Snowchains
Snowchains
Ok so I have read the posts here saying NO SNOW CHAINS on the Evo, get winter tires. Problem is I live in Southern California where the average temp is 70 and it never snows. BUT every once in awhile, maybe once or twice a winter season we like to drive up to the mountains. Buying snow tires for that makes no sense. Is my only option to not take the Evo? How bad is the traction in the snow with the Yokahama tires? Anyone tried it? And anybody here taken the Evo to Big Bear without chains or winter tires and get any harassment from the police if the "require chains" sign is up?
Thank you
Thank you
I was able to get around my driveway pretty good in a few inches of snow w/the stock Yoko's, but there's no way I'd ever want to risk actually driving on them in crappy weather.
If you're going somewhere with major snow, either get a set of good snow tires or leave the Evo at home.

They are terrible.
And if I remember right from living in SoCal. You wont be able to pass once they start the snow chains or snow able tires passes. Can you use chains? Yes, would I with the Advans or any other summer tire. No.
I'd just rent an SUV for the day.

get a set of all seasons.. and drive carfully.. but then again i live in igloo land home of santa claus. we use winters all season.. and summers for a month a year.. kinda the otherway around for you...
and are summers useless for us?
Nope their fun and grippy!! But so are the winters... and if you want to be safer.. get them studded for pleasure!

"just sayin"? Lol that's the best time to go. The rover went through that stuff with street tires like it was dry asphalt. I was thinking maybe the Evo being all wheel drive could do it as well. I think the snow will come down tomorrow and it will be sunny this weekend anyways so the roads should be clear of snow. It's either the Evo or a BMW 135 and I am thinking I have a better chance with the Evo.
Thanks for the responses though. I don't go enough for it to be a huge deal but was just finding out my options.

Thank you. May not matter, the girlfriend is looking to trade the BMW on an Audi Q5 so if that happens we can take it. Buying tires for a trip once or twice a year doesn't make a lot of sense to me. But you guys answered my questions. My only experience in the snow was in the Rover I traded in. Even when it said chains needed I never put them on if there was no cops checking because the thing handled great. I will just make sure I don't take the Evo if it happens to be snowing the day we go.
