Tips to stop snapping brake bleeder valves / stripping bleeder valve threads

I have the worst luck / experiences with brake bleeder valves. In a previous car, I've snapped them in half, in this car, i've stripped the threads. The only constant fact is me so I ask you guys, are there any tips / precautions to follow to prevent such occurrences?

Don't over-tighten them?

I used a torque wrench this time, set it to 15 ft-lbs and tightened. Never felt the click, but my threads were destroyed.

Well, that's your problem. It's inch-pounds for brake bleeders, not foot-pounds.

edit: as pointed out subsequently, the FSM is in ft-lbs, not in-lbs

The spec is 14 +/- 1 ft-lbs or 19 +/- 1 N-m, is it not?

I used a different torque wrench set to 14 ft-lbs a previous time that I bled these brakes and it was fine.

Wow. You're correct that the FSM says 14 ft-lbs. That seems high. I now suspect that your torque-wrench is damaged, instead, especially if you've bled the brakes before using 15 ft-lbs and had no problems.

Sorry about the implications of my previous post.
