The thing to remember is that it's all about surface area when it comes to intakes. Well, that and filter element placement, and flow through as few bends as possible.

The SRI is gonna be the better intake. Simply put, a conical intake filter has more surface area than a panel filter like the K&N. That, and a SRI eliminates all the resonators in the stock air-box.

Now, that's not to say that the K&N is a bad mod, however, at 70 bucks, it's not a very cost effective one. Now, if you have someone who is willing to sell theirs for half that price (see my posting in the Wanted/For Sale section), then it's a cost effective mod.

Sticking with the theme of cost effectiveness, your best bet would be to pick up streetlancer's drop-in filter for half the price. Getting a short ram will get you more performance, although the amount gained may be negligible.

I'd say that if you plan on doing more to your car, why not go ahead and get the "most" out of your intake and go short ram? Sure, it will cost more, but if you're gonna spend the money, might as well do it right.

Only problem with panel is all the turbulent stock ducting. When I rallied production class (rules said I had to keep stock air box) Sent my panel to Uni Filter. They were going to make a "high performance" panel. The guy there was a friend of mine. Once he saw it, he told me that a stock panel like mine ( Corolla GTS not Lancer but just like Lancer) could not be improved upon. That the hi performance one would still have the same surface area. Therefore, no improvement..... I kept the stock one. Just food for thought.

yeah, i totally agree with getting a short ram over a drop-in, even though i own one but it was a gift, dammit!!! i wanna CAI, but the K&N will last me till my car dissolves! thats the one good thing. i cant really tell any power gain, but it does sound a lil different.......but whos going for sound?? id go for the short ram ****!! good luck!

You seem to have a fetish for intakes currently bobaab...

Drop in for convenience and longevity overall. Plus, no nasty dealer hassles if they arise over repairs. (God bless Moss-Magnussen). The short rams for (hopefully) a small kick in the pants and a good sound.

Goes back to what I said about the resonators and just the general inefficiency of the design of the stock airbox. The only thing you're really overcoming with a drop in filter is the filter itself, which is only part of the problem with the stock box.

However, like I said, as far as cost effectiveness goes unless you get the drop-in for free (like I did) or for much less than retail (like I'm offering *damn, I'm running alot of shameless plugs*), then, the short ram is definately the better choice.
