Just because his goals for the car are different from your own, that doesn't give you the right to say things like that.

Shutta - Your parents won't buy you an Evo because of your explanation of "I'm gonna de-tune this evo so it will be slower"
Whats your next plan?
"i'm gonna swap in civic engine, your thoughts?"
If your parents weren't going to buy you the Evo in the first place....listen to them, they are paying for your car , if it weren't for them you would be bumming rides or getting on the city bus.
Later in life, with your own money buy whatever you want so you don't have to "de-tune" ..........

listen if you wanna be pimp while a senior in high school get your parents to buy you a 73 dodge van and roll to parties with 20 of your friends in the back. think about it, its a roliing sex machine if you put a mattress back there
You guys are awfully hard on the kid. De-tuning an evo & slowly getting the performance back up as driving skills improve sounds like a GREAT idea.
Lowering the boost won't hurt the engine. Whoever said it will screw with the timing that's just not true, it doesn't work like that. It will probably run full timing advance which is fine. No knock @ 12psi lol.
Anyway, lowering the boost isn't the only thing you would need to do. You also need to put on some all-season radial tires like the Kumho Ecsta ASX. The stock tires are not suited to casual drivers because they track road grooves so bad, and they don't have good all-season performace where the casual driver will get in trouble. All-season radials will take the bite out of the handling and give you an added margin of safety in foul weather.
Lower boost + all-season radials would probably make a great tame Evo to drive till you build up confidence.
Nothing will save you though if you drive like an ***, but assuming you don't, it should be fine.
Good Luck!

Get the hell over it. If you took the time to read instead of making assumptions, you would realize that he is wanting to learn about the car for a POSSIBLE FUTURE PURPOSE and is wanting to know ways to make it LESS powerful than it is in stock form.
Sometimes I wish I could execute people through the internet.

Dude -- it's like you've been reading my mind. Is it me, or has the maturity level on evom.net dropped considerably in the past few months? I remember days where people had reasons to like the EVO that did not fall into the "because I'll look cool" or "it's one of the cars from Gran Turismo 3" categories. Now, everyone is an instant automotive expert with the ability to reign down upon the rest of the members with authoritative knowledge. WTH?!?!?
