"Free" Mods

Howdy folks,

My brother has a 2002 Yellow OZ Rally Edition US Spec Lancer.
We already got an Eclipse adapter(25$) and put a conefilter(45$) on that, and also we unbolted the muffler(surprisingly, it's not very loud with the muffler unbolted, a lot quieter than my car with an unbolted muffler).
I'm just wondering what other "free" or cheap mods there are that we could do to help it become a little faster. I raced him with my girlfriends 98 Corolla automatic and beat him by a little bit, his Lancer is an automatic too.
I already read about the timing advance topic, but like someone mentioned in that thread, the ECU will most likely compensate for it anyways.

Any help is appreciated.

You muffler is far from a major exhaust restritctor. The two catalytic converters and piping diameter are far more restrictive.

What do you mean by "eclipse adapter"? I'm kinda assuming you mean a MAS adapter plate, but I dunno. There really isn't a lot you can do for the Lancer for cheap or free that will effect it much at all.

It's not my car, it's my brothers. I have a Celica.
By adapter I meant the Mass Air flow sensor part. It's an adapter plate with 4 inch outlet.

damn yo don't ghetto out the car. save up some money and do stuff the right way. the car will never be faster if you don't put some quality (expensive) products into it. your just going to mess up the motor if you don't do stuff the right way.

An adaptor and cone filter are ghetto? What is the Road Race intake and RMR intake then? Adaptors with cone filters. No harm. As for the timing advance, it's possible without a cam gear and "dude in a mirage" posted up a how to. There's always the ability to hack apart the stock air box (someone just recently did) and a great site for ideas is: http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html

Well, your car parts doesn't need to be expensive at all.. Just like RRM, they sell parts for a reasonable price but has good quality. But on the other hand, why settle for cheap or free, when you can give it your best... Just my opinion...

I don't care for the Muffler idea, but, other than that, I don't think anything else is "ghetto."

Fact is, this car, you have to work for your gains, but, it's worth it.

weight reduction, thats always free

uhm i believe you can reprogram the tranny for racing style shifts, just disconnect that battery to reset the ecu and then drive around like ur racing. but i only suggest doing that on race day cuz if u do that and then drive normal, your car will learn how to drive normally again

the throttle cable. follow the throttle cable to near the throttle body. you should see an adjustment plate. with the car on, tighten up that cable for better pedal response. but watch out, if its too tight, you can have a higher idle

if you got some *****, take the guage faces and remove them. then stick em in your scanner and scan them. that just modify them in photoshop and you got custom guage faces.

hmm this SCC article gots some mods u might wanan look at. if ur that hardcore.. http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/fe...red/index.html

Hey, cheater! That's the link to my old avatar!

Oh yeah, and tightening the throttle cable will briefly bring mild, mild results, but the ECU learns too quickly. It'll correct for it in a matter of days. Kinda stinks.

Just for the record, that old av was pretty badass dude.

And as far as what you all have done to the lancer so far. I agree with all things except the removal of your muffler. When you get the time and money either get one of the few cat-backs made, axel-backs or just get a stainless steel high flow muffler and get some custom piping fitted and welded up under the car.

Unbolting the muffler on my Brother's Lancer gives it a distinct growl. Not too loud, not too quiet, and definately not Civic-like lol. It's a common practive among Celica enthusiast(myself) to unbolt the muffler when hitting the track. I'm pretty sure it gives some gains because many people are able to cut somethin like .2 seconds off their ET. I myself have done it to my Celica, but I only do it when I hit the 1/4 mile track. Unbolting the muffler on my car, it becomes noisy and annoying, but on my Bro's Lancer it's not loud, and actually sounds nice.
We don't have a lot of money and every little modification we can do to our cars even if helpin only a little is somethin to start off with.
I think his next mod is going to be a nitrous kit, I suggested a 50 shot to be on the safe side... what's the highest shot the 2.0 liter handle anyways, before detonating?

well that post was in no way rough or whatever you may call it. I just turned 18 and anyone can get 10g's over a year and a half if they want to (like myself working my *** off for the damn lancer).

I was mostly commenting "ghetto" with the exhaust. oh man nitrous...no comment on that one...jus be very careful man...
