EVO MR or GTO 04
If I wanted straight line performance I would buy the GTO. THe LS1, Tremec 6 speed and Dana rear are proven and bulletproof. There are millions of cheap parts to make an LS1 go fast and they are cheap. Paying 23K for the car would leave a lot of money for upgrades.
Since I actually drive a car and stop and turn and like a trunk, I bought an Evo. The GTO/LS1 is an incredible deal and a formidable performance car, just 1 dimensional.

I looked at both those cars before buying the RS (as well as S4, VW R32, etc). I might have been more likely to get the GTO if the 400 hp version was out when I was shopping. However for me it came down to where I live. My daily driver should have AWD, and I already have a fast RWD car. If I lived in Arizona or something I might be more likely to buy another fast RWD car.
GTO will be easier to make faster, that motor is ****. It is heavy and the suspension will be sloppy compaired to teh Evo. But it'll get better gas milage on the HWY. These motors also LOVE Nitorous and your $500 from an 11 second car with just a $150 shot.
For $230 a month, I would go with the GTO, that is amazing.

LS2 + 50 more HP for 10,000 dollars. There isn't near the aftermarket for it either. Anyone could pick up a leftover, throw a few grand at it and smoke an LS2. Just not worth the money to buy the new latest and greatest at such a premium.

04 gTO Was the first car i test drove on my long road to being in debt nice car and *****ING ill say it again *****in interior seriously thats some nice ****. Car seemed very fast, but kinda heavy did not turn very well at all and had a ton of body roll. i was seriously going to buy it. Then i found a 04 SVT cobra (GTO what ??) same deal tho all *** no legs. i talked massive #'s on the Cobra. i did not even know an EVO existed cept the
dealer was right accross the street from Ford i decided to go look around for ****s and gigs then i saw this little car with a big wing all hiding away in the back lot. walked over to it and i had a sales man on me. He starts telling me crap about the car blah blah he rambles on past the HP # and i said whoa whoa how much HP ! he replied 271. he got the keys.
he told me only direct competition was subie so i went there asked them why i should i buy an STI over an EVO and the sales man said well the STI is a better car.
I left after i was told not to touch the shifter.
Long story short Got Evo never looked back.
BTW wont it suck to get passed on the Hwy by a 4banger you could have owned =/ hehe JK GL with decision hope this helps

the EVO is more well rounded car. whether it be rain, snow, loose gravel. the EVO would take it. not to mention the EVO can seat four comfortabley..i've never actually sat in the GTO though. i guess the comfy factor would be even...i think the GTO has four racing seats. but anyway the EVO was made to take hits. now i don't know much about the GTO i'm really just biased towards EVO's. what you really should do is to take both cars out for a drive....and choose from your gut feelings. don't think too much into it.
i went for a ride in 2005 GTO it was very nice and very quick.....i think i could keep up with one till about 40mph but after that i would get my *** handed to me......drifting was fun but i would want to drive one in the rain and forget about the snow.........i would get both!!!
