I have alwayas thought it was a waste of money paying someone else to change your oil now after working at a jiffy lube i see it as a big risk. One guy who worked with me was notorious for stripping drain plugs and then shoving a rubber stopper into the drain and letting you drive out like nothing happened only to find out the next time you went to change your oil that the plug was gone and you now had a ruber cork instead
on payin someone to change my oil

if you drive a turbo car you really should uses the best you can afford, you turbo will thank you. As for everyone else you CAN switch from syn to non and vice versa just don't make it a habit (I have read and discussed this to no end on the vwvortex) it's all about preference and how much you love you car

call me cheap call me lazy, but i take my filters off with a screw driver, just jam that ***** through the filter and then turn

to answer the og post. i use Castrol syntec. its about 5/qt. and use fram oil fliters (usually)

I think the socket is 17 mm to the oil pan

It's very easy. I'd recommend getting an oil filter wrench though, because hand torquing isn't easy. Besides that all you need is something to collect the oil, a socket to loosen the plug, a new filter, some oil (3 quarts worked fine for me), some jack stands and some time.

Nice choices.

I let Valvoline oil change do it and I get the Durablend ( half synthetic - half regular ) at 5 w 30. I love my car and they do a good job.

Since I have put on the SRI, I will be doing my own oil changes. I had the dealer do the first 2 but don't want no **** from them. Northern Virginia can be *******s though, you must do it inside a closed bay/building. I live in a townhouse with no garage. I'll try to sneek out early in the morning and change it in my parking spot. Thinking about going the Castrol syntec route too, change it every 5,000 miles.

Mobil 1 Syn or Penzoil Syn...synthetic is better for your engine...and if you keep good records will hold the resale value higher for longer...

Its really easy to change it yourself, I always do mine...Jiffy Lube puts everything on SOOO tight though so once I started changing it myself I keep changing it myself...

Think of it this way, people with real performance cars wouldn't put anything but syn in...the evo VIII warranty requires it infact, so why wouldn't you do the same for your car...???

i'll never take my car to shop for an oil change. did it once and they totally messed it up. the oil filter wasn't tightened down enough and a week later I found 2 quarts of oil on my driveway.

I changed my own for a long time but I just moved into an apt and the management frowns on that sort of behavior in their parking lots.
