New driver here thinking about buying a Lancer
Hi, I'm new to the whole driving scene (I'm 15) and I really want to get a Lancer but so far everybody I've asked says not to get the Lancer because it is weak, and will break down easily. Just wondering what Lancer enthusiasts think. thanks!
it's not weak at all.
Just go see one at a dealer you'll see it's "tight"... still built in japan.
If your "weak" means not powerful, then it's true, it's not the most powerful car out there, but at 15, I just don't want to see the insurance costs if you get a powerful car.
Just for the fun, what models are your friends recommending if they diss the lancer?

weak...maybe a little
break down?? i haven't really heard anyone with reliablity problems. some brake pads some clutches, but nothing major yet. remember, ppl have only had the car for about a year and a half, so they are still young. hopefully we wont start seeing problems til about 120,000. maybe a tranny replacement and normal wear but that's bout it.

lol, yeah I hear that the 120hp engine sucks and that it doesnt back up the sporty look from other people. The people I've asked on other boards have suggested I look at Nissans, some Subaru's, and Saturns in place of the Lancer.
"Personally, I would go with either a Nissan Sentra SE-R base model, it has more power and torque, great handling, and reliabilty.
or
Honda Civic EX. More horses, more room, better quality, and it has a HUGE aftermarket of parts you can get for it later.
or
Toyota Corolla S. More horsepower, more room, very nice styling. Unbeatable reliability and service."
What do you guys think ?

Or you could add the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Edition to your list.
Well If you could wait a little bit longer, the engine would be upgraded to a 2.7 liter outputting 160-180HP by the next redesigned 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Edition. So that should cure the negative talks that everyone is putting on the Lancer. Your choice....All it is patience.

the only other cars in the same price range/category are civic, protege, focus, sentra.
and personally the only other car that would interest me is the nissan. Civic have too high insurance (plus thqy're civics) and i can't stand fords/chevy/etc.
As I said, if you're looking in a sports car, get some $$$ because it's not cheap to have a powerful car!

The Ralliart Edition is also rumored to cost at a price range of $20,000 more or less. Somewhere around that range. More cars these days that are in the SE-R level have the same or a little bit more price on insurance. Still depends on your own statistics.

Heh, my mom's gonna be the one buying it. She's really the one that wants it. She wants a new car so she can give me her 2000 Celica, but the Celica is stickshift so she wants to get an Automatic O-Z Lancer, for me to get acquainted on before the Celica. Plus shes driven stickshift all her life, and shes tired of it, so she wants the automatic Lancer.
We have time. I barely finished my 6 hours behind the wheel lessons this morning lol, but my current situation is I have no car to practice with untill my mom decides when she wants to buy the lancer. because all the cars we've got are stickshift, and my mom's a really crappy teacher, and I dont know of anyone that could teach me.
