Honestly, how bad is the paint?
The red and yellow have a single stage paint job, meaning that they mix the paint and clear coat on the same stage. The other colors get a stage of paint first and then a stage of clear coat. Since the EB is metallic, it has a stage of paint and also clear coat on another stage process.....
Single Stage does not have clear mixed in from the factory. Note that you can mix clear in it to give increased depth/shine but a factory does not do that. Single Stage (SS) is just color by definition. Paint is very expensive, several hundred $/gallon retail on average- ask anyone who has bought automotive paint. Most new cars have about .006" of paint on them- thickness of 2-3 human hairs and this includes primer. Also, today's urethane paints are stronger and better than past paint formulas- far superior to lacquers and enamels of the past and also emit less VOCs when spraying than lacquers.
I think most high $ european cars use Glasurit which is probably the best paint and also the most expensive.
Also, buffing always removes paint. If you're buffing clear coated paint, then you don't see it- you're removing clear. If you're buffing single stage paint, you're buffing the color so you do see it.
Color sanding factory paint to remove orange peel is very risky- there is very little paint there to work with so proceed with caution.

Less than 600 Miles.
I have had my RR IX for less than two weeks and have not reached 600 miles yet. I was looking at the hood earlier and was amazed. There are more than a few paint chips. Most are very small but one is at least this big ->
<- they show up as white btw.
I had the windows tinted today and the installer was showing me the clear bra type film they use. He didn't have a template for the IX but is calling about it. Only problem is if it continues at the current pace it will need some hefty touch up before applying the clear bra.
The car also has massive swirls and some orange peel look to it. I work for an automotive supplier and one of the quality consultants told me they would reject a paintjob with orange peel looking like mine. This guy inspects quality on Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota and various others.
I was sold (by default) some kind of car care system for paint and interior. Going to have the dealer take a look at it. I can already tell by the tone when calling that the "Teflon Coating" package is garbage. When a warranty really has no guidelines and is totally based off of "Bring it in and let us have a look, well tell you if it's covered". Your screwed lol.
I am not so sure the "Teflon Coating" is not at least partly responsible for the swirls and orange peel. Also I'm pretty sure the aluminum makeup of the hood contributes to easy chipping. Anyways, hope this information helps.

I'll say this right now.... i scratched my Evo the first week i had it by taking out a road cone while doing a slalom (i wont say where.... lol). I did the exact same thing in my audi and it left an orange mark on the paint which rubbed off.
the evo paint is pretty weak.

Well the subaru's also ***** about their paint.
I had a WRX and an 2.5RS and they had extremely bad paint. I could nick it with my nail.
Well so far my car seems fine, just been waxing once every other week hopefully that'll keep my paint fresh.

It would be interesting to find out if one can actually strip an evo's paint off entirely using bare hands (no tools). It will probably take a while, but I'm sure it's possible.
If GM can almost get away with not putting primer on hundred of thousands of cars/trucks in the early 90's,then Mitsubishi can do a poor paint job now.The GM case took almost 5 years before a court would hear the complaints.Doesn't that sound like something a cost-cutter would do for the instant cash benefit?
I just picked up a IX GG and don't notice it to be any different then any other new car I have owned. I only have 650 miles but no chips yet I don't know if the dealer put something on or not but the finish is really smooth and non stick if that makes and sense.

I just got a new Rally Red EVO IX.. the right rear door has multiple little chips on it..
only 300 miles on the car
does the car come with any kind of paint protection warranty?
Anyone try to bring their car back to the dealer?
