Some Questions Before Purchase
Some Questions Before Purchase
As of the moment i own 2 cars one i drive everyday and the other is a 93 Rx-7 fully modified. I plan on selling them both because i want a nice, fast, fun car to drive everyday and all year. Since i live in ohio the rx-7 doesn't get drove at all almost half the year which i'm tired of.
So i decided on buying a used evo with low miles. I figure keeping it stock or damn near stock i would be able to have a reliable car that would be good in every season and still be fun to drive is the evo that car?
How bad are the clutchs truely i've heard that evo clutchs go out fairly easy is this true and what is the normal life of a evo 8 clutch.
How much should i pay for an 03-04 evo 8 with around 10,000-20,000 miles?
I still want the warranty to be active on the car that i buy.
What problems do people have with evos as daily drivers?
Will it cost me a ton to maintain this car like my FD does?
What mods if any should i do to the car. say (boost gauge, intake)?
Since it will be a daily driver.
Thank You for your help!!!

The brake systems can on some evos need to be replaced pretty regularly, tires dont last (duuuurrr) AWD fluid changes, then all the fun mods............. I dont own a RX so I have no idea the diffrence.
The cluth all depends on how you treat it, if you keeping it stock, or close then you should be able to get at least 11k miles on it, the material is soft to save the drivetrain which is a lot more expensive to replace.

11k you've got to be kidding right that is outrageous

But other than the clutch there are no real problems with the cars? If the clutch went before 36k shouldn't the warranty cover it, i mean hell a clutch going out in a car that is stock for before 36k is outrageous.
By the way im no young dreamer about this either, soon as i sell my FD i will be buying an Evo!

She is my baby but its time for something i can drive everyday.
If someone was looking for a rx-7 that is nearly completed it is perfect! The motor is still strong as hell and if you wanted you could run a ton of boost more than i running at the moment with it.
14psi on a T-78 isn't ****!!!
Sorry, man, but if you think that's bad on an Evo, you need to do a LOTTTTTTTTTTTTT of searching. No manufacturer covers clutches that long, because they are wear items. Plus, getting an 03 doesn't matter how many miles it has, because the 3-year portion of the warranty will snag you very soon. Hell, many 03s are already out of warranty even with 10k miles just because of how long it's been. 04s obviously have another year, but the ones bought in late 03 have less than a year left, so you should not be focusing on the mileage as much as the age. 05s have a much longer warranty and are much better overall unless you plan on gutting this Evo and making it a race car, which I doubt, since you want the warranty.
03/04s have the most problems and require the most maintenance. Here are some examples:
- Clutch (buying used, I bet you have to change it either right away or in a few months)
- Brakes (pads need to be replaced and rotors are known to warp)
- Fluids (need to change tranny/diff fluids every 15k, fully synthetic oil every 4-5k)
- Synchros (big problem on 03/04s, but there is a TSB for them - doesn't apply if out of warranty)
- Tcase (many tcases have been blown due to people doing 7k clutch dumps)
- Tires (only last 15k at most and are very expensive to replace - buying all seasons is cheaper but just takes away a ton of the Evo handling abilities)
- Power (03/04s are the weakest of all USDM Evos)
- Handling (no ACD or FLSD except for the 04 RS that has FLSD only)
- 03s don't have an SSL option, but all 03/04s have HIDs unlike 05/06s (dumb move by Mitsu)
My clutch lasted 7500 miles, but that was due to lots of racing and abuse. Some people have gone as high as 95k on the stocker, so it can depend on your driving and how much racing you do...

So the 03/04 cars have problems with their synchros, which warranty would cover the synchros going bad.
Also how much more am i looking to pay for a 05 over a 03/04??
I've got 25k on my 03 and no problems with clutch or syncros.
My car isnt driven every day but when its driven its usually racing.
100+ quarter mile runs and many autocross days.
I run 13.1 @ 103 with 60' usually right around 1.8sec. Its mostly stock, cat back, Buschure intake, and mbc. Thats probably why no probs.
my 2cents.

I'm almost in exactly the same situation as you except that I'm not selling my 93 RX-7 as it's all paid for. The Evo is going to be my daily driver, and I plan on keeping it stock. I will be getting an 03 because a friend of mine is selling his, and unlike any other Evo out there, I know this one's history and that it was treated well. Despite that, I do worrry a bit because it's basically out of the 3yr/36k warranty. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but I do want to ask a question to current owners. Doesn't the car come with a longer powertrain warranty? Or did I just read something incorrectly somewhere?
