now, that being said....what are my best choices?
The stock pads will disintegrate on the track. It happened to me my first time out. As a safety precaution I strongly advise you not to use them on the track. Get some dedicated stock pads. Stock pads are overpriced crap.

Oh yeah, try searching the hundred threads already covering this.

Whats usual mileage to change Brake pads? I think I'm horribly due for some front ones.

My hawks squeel a bit as well, quite annoying. They are installed correctly and I've had them checked and rechecked as well as sanded, etc.

While we're on the topic of brakes, what brand of brakes are the best for daily driving and at the same time minimize break dust?

Man, I really appreciate your post. I need pads already. Mine are making noise at 23K miles and I think I must replace them... I hate that people always post crap like everything they got is better than stock. Then I listen to that crap and sure enough, whatever they talk about is not like stock maybe faster than stock, or more powerful, grabby, stiffer. etc. But not like stock....

I want to replace my brake pads but i don't want noise, excessive dust or pads that need to be heat cycled before they stop. A couple of years ago I did replace the stock pads on my last EVO with Project MU pads and they were quiet and produced no noise. Actually, the stock pads in my '03 EVO made a squealing noise but the MUs did not.

The stock pads in my '05 MR are very good, the brakes have been very good, no shimmy or shake, the pads were quiet, etc. The brake dust has been a problem, but I expected that. Please people, if you have suggestions, make them, but please remember that I don't want track pads or competition pads.... I do not autox or track race my car. It's 100% a daily driver with an occasional spirited drive in the twisties

The trick is not to take your car to the track .... Really, I have never taken my EVOs to the track and it's extremely unlikely that I will do so in the future. Most folks just drive their cars for commuting and daily driving. Dedicated race pads are totally unsuitable for daily street driving and are actually quite unsafe as they will not even begin to stop until they are hotter than hell.... Who needs that in the daily commute?

OK, here is the deal. I called O'Brien Mitsubishi and the service guy told me that the do the complete brake job, including turning the rotors for $380.... That sounds pretty good to me. The cheapest pads for the EVO (Project MU NS) will cost around $160~$180. The dealer is willing to do the job with OEM pads, labor and all for $200 more. To me that's a bargain. I've scheduled an appointment to get the brakes done Monday!
(That is if I don't trade my '05 MR on a '06 MR this weekend )

here's my problem.. i have about 27,000 miles on my daily driven '03 and my front pads are starting to make a scraping noise. more ocassionally as i procastinate on changing them. i don't do any hard driving but i don't want to lose any stopping power compared to my stock pads, and i want to avoid any squeeling.

question 1: would $85 project mu pads give me what i'm looking for?

question 2: should i resurface my rotors?

Have you changed your rear pads already? In my '05 EVO MR as well as in other ppls EVOs, the rear pads wear out much faster than the front pads..... It would seem that if your front pads have worn out, the rear pads must have disappeared a long time ago. Your rear rotors might be horribly worn...
If you've worn deep grooves on the rotors, you'd probably be very wise to have them resurfaced. I don't know if they can be resurfaced. In some Japanese cars the rotors are trash if they are scored.
If you want to make sure you have the same or better stopping power as the stock pads, you should get replacement OEM pads or some aftermarket high performance pads. I got a set of pads from Pep Boys for $90 (front and rear) but I have not changed them yet because the rear pads still have a little life. The front pads have lots of thickness left on them, I'm debating whether to replace them at the same time or not...... I'll post the results later.

I did put a set of Project MU pads in my last EVO VIII and they seemed to work great, but I did not race with them.........
