As much as the Evo fanbois want to believe it, the Evo and STI are still VERY close in performance.
1.) Yes the STI understeers more, but it's not something that you really notice and isn't a hinderance even in spirited driving on the streets. The current '06 has less than previous models as well and is more tail happy in general than the Evo. However, at the limits the STI will still have more understeer. A rear sway and a proper alignment on the STI can eliminate almost all the understeer in the STI.
2.) The Evo IX is more powerful than the STI, about 20whp.
3.) The STI is the better daily driver, it has a less punishing ride (longer suspension travel), more low end grunt, cruise control, and a better quality interior (more garish though).
4.) The STI takes nearly as well to mods as the Evo to a point... The biggest difference is aftermarket cams and the size of the turbo. Cams are difficult to do on an STI, the turbo is smaller, and the fuel system is closer to its limits. However with a TBE and tune the '03-'04 Evo 8 and STI are pretty close in power, the '05-'06 Evo gets and edge over the older Evo and STI mainly because it starts out with more. If you're looking to get 300whp+ the Evo is clearly easier and cheaper.
5.) I'd rather deal with Subaru than Mitsubishi in general, but that's very dealer dependant. I'm lucky enough to have a very good Mitsubishi dealership close by.
There are very few tranny problems with the STI unlike some here would lead you to believe and overall the STI is probably the more realiable car. The clutch in the Evo isn't as strong as that of the STI and neither seemingly is the transfer case. The engine in the Evo is more stout than the STI engine but both will be reliable as long as you mod properly.
6.) Looks are pure preference.
7.) If you want the better performance car the Evo is the choice IMO. If you want the best all around car it really just depends on what you're looking for from a car, they're very close and both are great cars.
Here's the latest comparo of the Evo vs. STI in Motortrend (since someone felt the need to post the old one). The Evo was slower than it should be and the STI was a little faster than it usually is so take the performance numbers with a grain of salt. However, it's still a good indicator that the performance is still not far apart despite the Evo IX having more power.
Usually the Evo edges out the STI in comparos, in this one it did not.

I have owned 2 Sti's an 04 that I kept stock and a modded 05. I now have a 05 evo VIII and I have to say the 04 sti was faster than the 05 sti, but I will add that Sti was a freak of nature and it never lost to any other Sti or Stock Evo. It pulled hard to about 110 and then it would start to run out of wind as both the stock Sti and Evo do and would loose out to SS Camaros, Cobra Mustangs from a roll. The 04 Sti got vandalized bad and it was never the same and had to get rid of it.
.
Once again I chose the 05 Sti over the Evo although at that time I did not realize the difference in motors and how much better the Evo took to mods than the Sti.
The 05 stock was slower but a better daily driver than the 04 until I started to modify the car and then the truth came out!!
The Sti is a great car and I twice went with it over the Evo even though both times it was obvious to me that the Evo hands down out performs the Sti in turns, has way better seat suppot etc etc. The reason was I thought that Subaru was a better built car and has better dealer support. NOT TRUE: Start to modify the car and the dealer suppot fades very fast.
I got the 05 Evo and sold the 05 Sti. I put a AMS stage 1 kit on the Evo. and I had a chance to race both cars against each other many times before the Subie was sold. With about $7,000.00 in mods in the Sti and only $1,000.00 into the Evo. The Evo beat the Sti every time and we raced from out of the hole trough the Quarter and from a roll. I felt like hell putting all that money in the Sti and getting beat buy a almost stock Evo.
My Evo is now at AMS for a major build ( can't wait to get it back) and I'm so glad I got the Evo. It grows on you each day, handles great and engine takes to mods so much better than the Sti and I finally feel I have the right platform to get some serious horsepower out of a car.
Bottom line they are both great cars and in stock form You'll like ethier one. They each have there strong points, BUT IF I KNEW BACK THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW I would have saved myself a lot of money and time and BOUGHT THE EVO IN THE FIRST PLACE. Plus Stock for stock an EVO 1X or Mr is hands down better than a Sti and if you can't see that, then you'll probably go down the road I did and have to find out the hard way!!
Good Luck

Warrtalon is right, pardon my false statement...I was referring to a dynojet and did not look I just assumed I was right...oh well...thanks for correcting me
and I did a little research and it appears the standard pull for a stock sti is about 235-243 whp on a DYNOJET
not sure about the evo though

I drive a WRX (stg 2) daily - test drove the IX and the STI the same day, and IX clearly was the better handler. STI felt a little stronger down low, but didn't rev either car above 4500, so the IX may have caught it on top.
Ordered a IX MR for the new daily driver. Kids will be driving the WRX

jemjow - I wish I was still in the states.. I would gladly take your GG IX for an 06 STI... It is definitely personal preference, but I'm sure if you posted that same comment on the STI forum, then I bet you would get some help to accomodate your request.. Do it just for fun.. I'm curious as to what kind of feedback you would get..

Here is the way it is. I have an evo, brother has a STi..and i have good friends with both evos and stis, so ive driven a BUNCH of different ones.
If i were going to keep the car stock, forever, i would undoubtebly buy a STi. It is friendlier to the driver, less raw, better styling, cruise control, etc.
If i were going to mod it, id go evo...without a doubt. For many reasons, easier to get power, cheaper, easier to work on, etc.
I wish i could afford my racecar evo and a STi daily driver. But i can't.

I'm a big Scooby fan, I've owned two turbo models and my wife currently drives a 2.5 turbo Outback.
I test drove both, on the same day, both were very new with little mileage.
I bought an Evo, the Evo feels more precise, agile, sharper. I liked the STI loads its one big downside for me is that huge bonnet scoop in your vision all the tme.

Okay, here it is again... I own both:
Exhibit A: JDM Evo VIII MR
Anyway the S203 is no slouch, but it is slower. I hit around 170mph on the evo, but haven't gone past around 160mph on the S203. It probably can go faster, but it takes considerably longer. Due to silly ECU problems, the Sti won't get a test pipe but a hi-flow cat instead.
What I hope to show here is that with basic mods, the evo is quite a lot faster than something that is already a lot faster than a stock Sti. However, the Sti, IMO is a better package as a car and it drives nicer in most circumstances.
Evos are a thousand times easier to work on, and there's a lot more tuners out there than the Sti as far as I've found. The Sti's ecu apparently is very fussy about how it works so bascially do anything to it then you'll need a tune.
Exhibit A: JDM Evo VIII MR
- TD05HRA 16G and 10.5 hotside - stock
- Tomei o2 housing and downpipe, test pipe
- Greddy Ti cat back
- Ralliart Japan ECU, ignition wires
- Tomei BOV
- K&N drop-in
- Bilsteins - stock
- Volk Te37 17" with 235/45-17 Bridgestone Re-01R
- Mu Level Max 900 pads front and rear
- Subaru cliams these are 320hp and 311lbft from the factory
- 05-style so 35:65 f:r torque split
- Sti-struts - stock with this car. But they're the pink ones which I believe are different to what you get with a standard Sti but not that different, I've been told.
- BBS 18" wheels with 235/40-18 Pirelli Corsa tyres
- DS2500 pads
- The Subaru is a better built car.
- Both understeer about the same. Subaru oversteers more on-power, Evo understeers both on and off.
- Subaru would be better at tight slaloms. It's more manoeuverable in tight corners/low speeds. The Evo is more stable but therefore more clumsy. This make a difference if you drive in a city or in traffic.
- The Evo brakes MUCH better. I know they're on different pads and this may be much of the difference, but the pink Sti pads totally suck. The stock evo pads are much better IMO.
- Now the reason I list the mods above is so that it would mean a lot when I say that the evo is the faster of the two. The thing is, the Tomei and Greddy parts can be had for much less money to achieve the same effect (e.g. Buschur or even eBay o2 housing!!). The Ralliart ECU I suppose would be similar to a custom flash if not a little worse. So, all this being faster compared to an Sti that they claim to be 320hp is saying a lot.

how about the reliability aspect? i have decided that i want the evo but the only thing thats holding me back is because of hte horror stories that i read a lot about hte evos. some say that the subarus break more but from what i see on these boaards and their boards evos break more, a lot more
It's as reliable as your driving. Hell, I beat the living dog mess out of mine all the time by drag racing, autocrossing, and road racing constantly, but no problems yet in 18k miles other than clutch upgrades, but that's expected when racing.
